Chapter One

    I grinned as I snuck into my fiancee’s photo shoot. He is going to freak when he sees me in this fancy gown my stylist suggested I get when I told him my plan. I had been going to the same hair salon since it opened about a year and a half ago. Darien Price and Angel Kat sponsored its opening. I was actually there the day it opened and got to see both of them as they stood with the owner of the store and my hair stylist, Keith.

    I had been dating my high school sweetheart since junior year. Mark Darlene. He captured me the moment I accidentally bumped into him and he helped me up. From then on we accidentally run into each other. Later I found out that he ran into me on purpose. He wanted to get to know me and then we started dating.

    He dazzled me and swept me off my feet for years. Even in college, he was there to dazzle me. He met me for lunches and sometimes for dinners. We both helped each other through college with our subjects. We studied together and celebrated when we passed each of our tests. Cursed at our teachers who where tough. We were always so very close.

    When we graduated we moved in together. He has been very successful in photograph and now works with magazines, newspapers, and freelance. People have been lining the block to have him take their picture.

    I, on the other hand, have been struggling with my paintings and artwork. In the past three years I’ve only been able to do three art gallery opens. Its been hard to get people to see my work or to buy it. I have been on the verge of giving up, but he has encouraged me to continue on. This surprise was for him.

~~~
    I walk in knowing that he had just wrapped up his photo shoot and he would be packing up his equipment. I drew closer to his studio and turned the last corner when a sound froze me to my core. No no no! Thats not what it really sounds like. It can’t be. There must be another reason for the sounds. Someone else is doing that.
    “Oh Mark! Yes! YES!!!”
    It has to be another Mark. Mark is a very common name, right? Like Joe or James. There are tons of Marks out there. There’s no way my Mark could cheat on me. He loves me too much to hurt me like that.
    “JESSICA!!!” I clenched the wall as my heart stopped. It was my Mark. I would recognize his voice anywhere. He just screamed another woman’s name. Tears flowed down my eyes as I turned and ran. I didn’t care if the door made a bang sound as I raced away telling them they just had an audience.
    I ran not caring where I went. My heart beating and breaking from the pain of betrayal. The one I loved just betrayed me and I didn’t know how long he has been betraying me. He has always worked late. Always said he was working certain weekends. Never did I think that there was something going on. I believed him at his word all the time.
    I stopped when I couldn’t breathe any longer. I fell to the ground and sat up against the building with my hands over my eyes. People passed by me, but none stopped. They had their own lives to live. I was no one to them.
    Somewhere a door opened and then someone running my way. “Patience?” I peeked over my hands to see the concerned face of my hair stylist Keith knelt down. “Oh honey! What happened?” I just burst into harder sobs that wracked my entire body. “Come on girl. Lets get you inside away from prying eyes.”
    Keith hooked my arm around his neck and helped me up from the street. My other hand stayed on my face as we walked. He helped me into his shop and to the back room. The shop was silent as my sobs were heard by everyone. He set me down on a couch and got me a box of tissues.
    After a minute, he took my hands and looked me in my redden eyes. “What happened? You were so happy earlier and I see you got the dress. Which I might point out does look fabulous on you.” A strained and painful laugh came out of my mouth.
