Chapter Thirty-One
Something flashed through my mind as I watched Darius’ hand glide over Patience’s sketchbook again. “Were there any other drawings after...?” I grimaced at the image of Father about to rape Patience.
Darius looked down at the book on his lap and then back up to me. “Not that I know of, but I don’t want to open it again.” He shook his head. “I can’t open it again.” He sighed as he handed it to me as I took a seat next to him.
I took it in my hands and tentatively opened the book. I flipped through the pages that we already saw making sure not to show the most heart wrenching one of all. To my shock there were more. Though the next one was a sad sight as well. I heard Darius’ breathe catch.
The picture showed Darius holding Patience with her appearing lifeless. Tears were running down his face as it looked like he was begging her to come back. There was no light of life in her eyes as every artist does. Her features seem so much paler than other drawings. He was pulling a sheet up to cover her.
My heart squeezed and nearly stopped thinking that we weren’t going to make it. That somehow Patience was going to die. Then I noticed that there was a darkness swirling about her. Around mainly her neck and her heart. She would die because of Father’s darkness?
I turned the page and it was split between two pictures with a phrase at the bottom of the page stretching over both. The phrase said “Thou kiss thy sleeping beauty and bring she back to life.” The first half was Darius kissing Patience gingerly with tears still in his eyes. The second was her gasping for air while Darius burst into more tears with a happy smile on his face. The light of life was back in her eyes and no more darkness anywhere near her.
Darius took the book from my hands and looked at it over and over again. “She’s more than any sleeping beauty.” He mumbled to himself.
I watched as he turned the page and saw a picture of Darius carrying Patience out of the compound with some of my brothers and sisters aiding him by keeping others back. Her wings were wrapped around him and her head rested on his shoulder. There was a light coming from the two of them. Only together were they shining so bright.
“I think we have allies at the compound.” Darius looked at me confused. I sighed as I pointed to one of my brothers. “This is Han. He has the gift to know how one was feeling.” I pointed to another brother. “This is his best friend Barr. See how they are smiling. They must know something is up and happy to see you two together.” I moved to point to one of my sisters. “That is Leah. She too is smiling with a knowing look in her eyes. She is always a perceptive young woman.”
“I hope you’re right. If we already have allies, that will make things a bit easier.” Angel Kat said as she leaned over the back of the couch. I noticed that she was wearing a costume that I could only describe as a superhero outfit. White, gold, and silver were the only colors I could see in the outfit.
We were all drawn away from Patience’s sketchbook when the door bell rang. Darien had appeared and opened the door. Two men came through the door, but both stopped wide eyed at me. I slowly closed her sketchbook and handed it to Darius who held it close to his heart.
“Who’s he?” One pointed at me making me swallow hard.
“Let me introduce you to Targ. He came to try and prevent what happened.” Angel Kat informed the now angry looking man. Quickly she had to hold him back. “Targ, can you give us some time to comfort Keith?” I nodded and got up going out onto the balcony.
I walked over to the chairs and sat down. I couldn’t feel my tail anymore but knew it was still aching. I sighed internally as I massaged it away from the view of others. It felt so much better when I could feel it again. I was also happy Pana made me these pants she fixed up for me. These slacks fit me nicely with the back seam open for my tail. I miss my love so much.
