"What time am I picking you up?" My mom asked me.
"About an hour or so." I responded.
She nodded her head as I got out of her car. I walked to the trunk and grabbed the bag that was holding the gardening tools and threw it over my shoulder. "Bye honey!" She said out of her window.
"Bye mom!" I shouted back as I typed the password into the lock. I heard my moms car drive away as I entered the gate.
That's when I sighed and started my walk down the long driveway. I was just approaching the house when the front door opened, revealing Carter. He smiled at me and then skipped down the steps and to me.
He stopped in front of me and looked up to meet my face. "Can I have a hug?" He asked.
I chuckled and nodded my head. He smiled as he wrapped his arms around my torso, hiding his face in my neck. "You don't have to ask me everytime you want a hug." I told him. "Just hug me if you want a hug, I'll always allow it and hug you back."
He blushed as he pulled away from me. "Okay." He responded.
We stared into ea h others eyes for a couple seconds before he blinked and shook his head, trying to clear it. "So," I said, regaining his attention. "Where should I start?" I asked him.
He gave me a confused look before noticing the bag of tools in my hand and realizing what I was talking about. "Well my mom did want you to cut that bush back over there yesterday." He said jokingly.
I chuckled. "Okay." I said, heading over to where the bushes in front of the house were.
I put my bag down and grabbed out the big pruners, or whatever the hell it's called, and started cutting back the bushes. I had already snipped a bunch of branches when someone cleared their throat from behind.
I turned around to see Carter looking down, sheepishly. "D-do you want some help?" He asked nervously.
I smiled at him. "Do you know how to use this?" I asked him as I pulled out the hand-held pruners. He stared at them for a second before shaking his head. I chuckled. "It's okay, I'll show you."
He smiled as he came closer to me. "So, what do I do?"
"Well these are basically like scissors, except more dangerous and for bushes." I explained as I placed it in his hand. "Now," I said as I got on my news, to which he hesitated to do, since we were in mulch, but he did it anyway. I placed my hand over his and brought it to the bush. My hand closed around his, causing the pruner to close and cut a couple leaves off the bush. "Just like that." I said.
He smiled happily. "I'm working." He said, with so much happiness in his voice it was impossible to miss.
I chuckled. "Yeah, you are."
.....
The next hour went by pretty fast, and Carter helped me the whole time. He was so excited to be helping and working, that when he started sweating he started jumping up and down because of how excited he was. I was now walking back towards the gate, him walking beside me.
"So, where are your parents anyway?" I asked, just now thinking about them and getting a little worried that he might get in trouble for helping me.
He shrugged. "Probably at some business meetings or something." He responded.
I nodded my head, before wondering what kind of business they even did. "So, what do your parents do anyway?"
"They own a whole chain of private resorts and spas and stuff like that."
"So like country clubs?" I asked.
He nodded his head and shrugged. "Yeah, I guess you could say that." We walked in silence for a couple seconds before he spoke. "What do your parents do?"
"My mom works as a secretary at a law firm. It may not be the best paying job but it gets us along."
He nodded his head. "What about your dad?"
I was silent for a moment before speaking. "My dad is in prison." I responded.
"Oh..." He trailed off. "I'm sorry."
I shrugged. "It's whatever."
"Do you ever see him?" He asked.
"No."
"Do you miss him?"
"No!" I said, in a tone that read I-want-this-conversation-to-end.
He stopped talking after that.
We had reached the gate and I could see my moms car parked across the street. "Look," I said, stepping in front of him and stopping. "I'm sorry for getting angry back there. I just don't like talking about my dad, he's a very sensitive subject."
He nodded his head. "I'm sorry for pushing." He said, quietly.
"You didn't, I got mad for no reason. I'm really sorry." I said, to which he smiled.
He started rubbing his hands together and looking down at the ground. "Umm...ummm..."
I was about to ask him what was wrong when he suddenly threw his arms around me. I smiled slowly as he nuzzled his face into my neck. I wrapped my arms around his shoulders and held him tight against me. I closed my eyes as I rested my chin on his head.
We stood there for about a minute before pulling away. "Did you know that you're a really great hugger?" I asked him, to which he blushed in response.
He shook his head. "I never get to hug anyone."
My smile slowly fell from my face. I walked right in front of him and put my hands on both of his upper arms. "You can hug me whenever you want, I want you to remember that." I said.
He nodded his head. "Okay." He said.
I pulled him in for one more quick hug before kissing his cheek, causing his face to turn redder than a tomato. "I'll see you at school on Monday." I said as I started walking backwards away from him.
He nodded his head as he waved.
I ran across the street and got into the car. I was about to speak when my mom said something first to tease me.
"Geez, could you boys hug any longer?"
