I walked in the direction of Carter's locker. It's been a little over a week since the incident at my house, it's now Tuesday.
I turned the corner onto the hallway where Carter's locker is, just to find out that he wasn't there. "Hey Jesse!" I heard from behind me.
I turned around to see Louie walking by, he's one of the kids that sits at our lunch table. He's the one that likes Kaitlyn, but she's too oblivious to realize it.
"Hey!" I said as I grabbed his arm.
He gave me a confused look as I turned him to face me. "Can I help you with something?" He asked, confused as to what was happening.
I pointed to where Carter's locker is. "Do you know where Carter is?" I asked.
He shook his head. "No, but Chloe probably does. She's much closer to Carter than anyone else of our group."
I nodded my head before patting his shoulder. "Okay, thanks!"
I ran off before he could respond. I had to find Chloe, who was one of the girls that sat at our lunch table. She has something going on with Hunter, I don't know if they're dating or not but they totally like each other.
I started searching up and down the school, hoping to find her before the homeroom bell rings. I was just about to give up when I saw her sitting on the floor in front of a row of lockers.
"Hey Chloe!" I called out to her as I approached her.
She looked up from the book she was reading. I stood in front of her. "Hey, do you know where Carter?"
She looked off for a moment, thinking, before her face lit up and she stood up. She grabbed my arm and dragged me along with her as she started to run towards a flight of stairs.
She stopped in front of it, before pointing upwards.
I turned towards her. "He's up there?" I asked, pointing up.
She nodded her head.
"Thanks!" I said as I started to go up the stairs but I stopped and turned back to her before I got too far up. "You don't talk much, do you?" I asked.
She shook her head.
I smirked. "You and Hunter really are perfect for each other." I said, to which she smiled slightly and blushed.
I chuckled as she rolled her eyes. She then shooed me with her hands, causing me to chuckle again and then start heading back up the flight of stairs.
There was a door at the top of the stairs. I walked up the flight of stairs and towards the door. I then slowly opened it, just to be blinded by the light of the sun.
I covered my eyes with my arm. I stood there for a few seconds before removing my arm and letting my eyes adjust to the brightness of the morning sun.
I then looked around and realized I was on the roof of the school. There was birds flying around, chirping and playing. The clouds were a very strong, pure shade of white. The clouds surrounding the sun, mixed in with the blue of the sky and the light emanating off the sun.
"How do you always find me?" I was suddenly interrupted when a voice sounded from my left. I looked to my side to see Carter sitting on a bench.
I smiled as I turned towards him. "Chloe told me." I said.
He gave me a confused look. "She spoke?" He asked.
I chuckled and shook my head. "No, she showed me the flight of stairs."
He nodded his head. "That sounds about right." I chuckled.
I looked back out at the sun. "This is beautiful!" I exclaimed.
I looked back over to him, to see him scoot over on the bench and pat the spot next to him. I smiled at him as I sat down next to him.
"Look." He said as he stared ahead. I then looked forward, to see the whole town being shined down on by the sun. The clouds and sky reflecting off the buildings and windows. The sun shining on the top of all the roofs of the two and one story buildings below.
"Wow." I said, and was about to turn towards him when I realized he had rested his head on my shoulder and had fallen asleep.
I smiled slightly and rested my head on his.
I started dosing off to sleep when the homeroom bell suddenly rang, causing Carter to shoot up and get wide eyes. "Oh my gosh, I have to go!" He yelled as he grabbed his bag as he ran through the door and down the flight off stairs.
I just sat on the bench, staring after him. "Weren't you just asleep?" I asked, even though he wasn't there anymore.
.....
"Hey!" I shouted as I saw Carter about to exit the school.
He turned around and saw me approaching him. He smiled as I got closer. "Hey." He said silently once I was right in front of him.
I smiled back at him. "Hey. So I was wondering if you could maybe come over to dinner at my place sometime this week." He looked away for a second. "I mean, I know about your parents and they probably wouldn't let you go but maybe-"
"Yes." He said, cutting me off. "I'll figure it out."
"Great!" I responded with a smile.
"How does tonight sound?" He suddenly asked.
My eyes got wide as I stared at him in shock. "Tonight?" I asked, surprised.
"Yeah, is that okay?"
I thought for a moment to make sure that I didn't have anything planned for tonight. When I realized that I was free, I nodded my head. "Totally! Tonight sounds perfect." I nodded, a smile on my face.
He was about to speak again when someone said his name from behind. We both looked behind him to see Jerald. "Sir? Are you almost ready to go?"
Carter nodded his head. "I'll be out in a few minutes."
Jerald nodded his head before looking up to me and smiling. "Hello, Jesse!"
I smiled back. "Hey Jerry." I responded, remember the nickname Carter said to him the first time I met Jerald.
He bowed his head before leaving the building and heading back to the car.
"Your grandfather's a really nice guy!" I said as I thought back to the day I first met him.
"He's not really my grandfather." Carter suddenly spoke up.
I looked at him. "What?" I asked a little confused.
"We made up that lie so people don't ask about my parents. He's not my grandfather, he's my driver."
"Oh..." I trailed off as I nodded my head slowly.
"Yep, he's my driver and he was my best friend." Carter said.
I looked at him confused. "Was?" I asked. "Why isn't he your best friend anymore?"
He looked at me, a small smile resting on his lips.
"Because you're my best friend now."
.....
