"Jesse." Someone whispered while they shook me to try to wake me. I could feel my Carter sleeping in my arms and my back was hurting from lying on the floor. "Jesse! Wake up!" The person said one more time while shaking me again.

I slowly opened my eyes and turned my head upwards to see my mother standing over me. Her arms were crossed and she didn't look happy. I tried my best to send her a smile. "Hi mommy." I tried to say with the sweetest voice I could muster.

She narrowed her eye at me. "Don't 'mommy' me." My smile fell from my face. "Get up and come here." She said, in her authoritive motherly voice.

I removed my arms from around Carter and untangled our legs before standing up and following my mom into the hallway. Once in the hallway, she pulled my door slightly closed and stood to face me.

"Why aren't you in school?" She asked.

"Carter didn't want to go and I figured-"

"You figured what?!" She questioned, interrupting me. "Just because he didn't want to go doesn't give you or him the right to skip. You still have to go to school. What if one day I just didn't want to go to work, so I didn't, I would get fired. I would have no income, which means we would lose our house and a ton of our belongings."

I looked down in shame. "I'm sorry mom."

"You know," she said, not responding to my apology. "I wouldn't be as angry right now if I hadn't found this." She said as she pulled her hand up in front of her. In her hand was my bag of weed. I must've forgotten to put it away before we fell asleep.

"Mom... I..." I trailed off, not knowing what to say. "I didn't get high." I said. "And neither did Carter."

She gave me a look that told me she didn't believe me. "Then why is it out?" She asked.

"I mean, Carter tried but it didn't work since it was his first time."

She sighed. "Honey, I know you like him and that this is his first taste of freedom, but you have to draw a line. That line stops when it comes to skipping school and doing drugs."

I nodded my head. "I'm sorry..." I mumbled as I looked down at the ground.

"I know, and I forgive you. Just don't do anything like this again."

I nodded my head once more.

Her hand reached out towards me and I looked at it to see my bag of weed. I gave her a confused look. "You can have this back, but I don't want you to do it in my house ever again."

I nodded my head as I took the bag from her.

She then turned around and walked downstairs. I sighed before walking back into my room. I sat down on the edge of my bed to see that Carter still had his eyes closed. I grabbed my pillow and flipped it over. I started to stick my stash back in the hole in the back of my pillow.

"I'm sorry that you got in trouble with your mom." I suddenly heard Carter said. I looked up to see him sitting up but staring at his lap.

I sighed and flipped my pillow back over. "It's fine." I said.

He nodded his head. "So what're we going to do now? I heard there's a party going on tonight and-" Carter began to say but I cut him off.

"We're not going to a party." I said. "Did you not just hear what my mom said?" I asked sarcastically, knowing very well that he at least heard some of it.

"Well I just thought-"

"Why are you acting like this?" I asked, cutting him off again.

He stared up at me in confusion. "What do you mean?" He asked.
