Carter quickly rushed forward and pulled the guy, who is supposedly his brother, into a hug.

His brother hugged him back. "I missed you, bro!" The guy said before pulling away.

"Who's at the door honey?" I suddenly heard my mom ask from behind.

I turned around to see my mom approaching. I opened my mouth to respond when I was interrupted.

"Marcus Martindale." He held his hand out as she neared.

She reached her hand out and shook hers with his. "Grace Tobias. Who exactly are you?" My mom asked.

He sent her a smile. "I am Carter's older brother."

My mom sent Carter a confused look. "I didn't know you had an older brother."

"Neither did I." I quickly added, finally getting to speak.

Carter looked down at the ground as Marcus looked over at him. "You didn't tell them about me?" He asked, sounding confused and hurt.

Carter shook his head.

"Well why not?" Marcus asked him.

Carter let out a shaky breath. "I have something to tell you..."

.....

"They've been what?!" Marcus shouted, causing Carter to flinch. "How could mom and dad do that to you?! How long has it been going on?"

"As long as I can remember..." Carter responded, while looking down at the ground.

His brother stared at him for a few seconds, a hurt look on his face. "And you never told me? Did you not trust me or something?"

Carter shrugged. "I didn't see you much growing up. I didn't know who to trust."

I gave him a confused look. "What do you mean you didn't see him much? Didn't you guys grow up together?"

Carter shook his head. "Marcus went to a boarding school, so I only saw him on holidays and summer break."

"I should've known." Marcus suddenly said, his voice breaking slightly. "Everytime I would call you sounded so sad and weak and I would ask if everything was okay and you would always tell me it was, but I knew deep down that something was wrong. I should've pushed you to tell me." He said, his voice getting thicker as he spoke.

Carter looked up at him in time to see a tear fall down his cheek. "Don't cry." Carter said silently.

His brother looked at his brother, more tears filling his eyes. "Why? I'm the worst brother ever. I never even knew my own brother was being abused by my parents. And I never pushed you to tell me what was wrong." Marcus looked down at the ground and shook his head.

We were all silent for a moment before my mom entered the room. "I just made some tea if you boys want some." She looked over at Marcus and her smile slowly fell from her face.

Marcus wiped his eyes and turned away. "I should go. Thank you for making tea and I'm so sorry that I won't be able to have any." He then walked to the door and left.

Carter stared at the door for a while. My mom walked out of the room and back into the kitchen, without saying a word.

Carter's eyes were filled to the brim, but he somehow managed to hold his tears back. I wanted to ask him if he wanted to go and do something but it didn't seem appropriate at the moment.

Carter stood from where he was sitting and walked up the stairs. I hesitated for a moment but followed after him to make sure that he wouldn't do anything stupid.
