I groaned as I heard the doorbell ring. I had just gotten comfortable on the couch and was about to start a movie.

I stayed quiet, hoping that maybe they would go away. But my plan was to no avail as I heard the doorbell ring once again.

I groaned another time as I rose up from the couch and walked to the door. "Look, it's Saturday and I-" I started speaking as I swung the door open but stopped when I saw who was outside. "Carter?" I asked as I looked down at the boy I've come to know over these past two weeks.

He smiled up at me. "Hello Jesse."

I gave him a smile that was partially mixed with confusion. "What're you doing here?" I asked him.

His smile slowly fell and he got a worried look in his eyes. "O-oh, I'm s-sorry. I-I should've asked b-before just-" he started to stutter out as he backed away but I cut him off.

"No, it's not that I don't want you here." I said, causing him to stop in his tracks. "It's just that you're never allowed to be out so I'm a little surprised that you're here."

"Oh..." He said as he looked to the ground in embarrassment, his cheeks turning red immediately. "Well, to answer your question, my parents are gone on some sort of business vacation for the weekend. So, I figured that I could try to hang out as much as I can."

I nodded my head and smiled at him. "And your first choice of people to hang out with was me?" I asked, a little smirk on my face.

He rolled his eyes. "I only chose you because you're the only person who knows about my parents." He responded, but I could tell that he actually did want thang out with me, he was just too nervous to admit it. "Jesse!" He called, regaining my attention.

"Um, what?" I asked, to which he giggled.

"I asked if I could come in." He said. "So can I?"

I nodded my head. "Yeah, definitely." I replied as I stepped back, pulling the door open a little wider.

He entered my house and started looking around immediately. He gave the foyer a little inspection before moving to where the living room is and scanning his eyes across the whole room. He finally turned back to me. "It's so tiny." He said to me, to which I responded with a roll of my eyes.

"Sorry we can't all have huge mansions." I said, teasing mostly but also a little offended. I mean, this is where I live.

He must've caught on to the defensiveness in my voice because he immediately shook his head. "I never said it was a bad thing." He said, as he started looking around the room again. "I like small places, they make me feel safe."

I wanted to ask him why but I fought against it because it probably had to do with his abuse and that would be a real damper on his mood. I was about to say something when he spoke up. "What were you going to watch?" I looked at the TV and remembered that I was going to watch a movie.

"Star Wars: Return of the Jedi." I responded to which he nodded his head.

"That's cool."

"Have you seen it?" I asked.

He shook his head. "I'm not allowed to watch movies or TV. My parents think that it'll affect my performance in my academics. I had to practically fight with them for a month just to get a cell phone." He said as he pulled it out of his pocket. "Speaking of, what's your number? I tried to look you up but couldn't find it, I could only find your address." He told me.

"You were looking me up?" I asked, teasing him.

He rolled his eyes once again. "I wanted to call and ask if we could hang out but I didn't have your number. So I searched you. Now what's your number?" He asked.

I shook my head. "I don't have one." I told him.

"You don't have a number?" He asked, obviously confused.

I chuckled as I spoke again. "I don't have a phone."

He gave me a confused look. "Why don't you have a phone?" He asked.

"I don't have enough money." I told him. "Hell, my mom can barely pay for cable."

"Oh, okay." He said as he tucked his phone away into his pocket.

He had a weird look on his face, as if he was thinking really hard about something, but I didn't ask him. If we wanted to tell me, he would. Well, I hope he would. Last time I found out something about him, I found out the hard way. Maybe I should ask him.

"What's on your mind?" I asked, interrupting him from his thoughts.

He looked at me and shook his head. "Nothing." He then smiled at me, but it slowly fell as he looked at the TV. "I'll leave you to watch your movie." He said as he started to head towards the entry way. But I stopped him by grabbing his arm.

He turned around and looked at me. "I'd much rather hang out with you than watch a movie that I can watch anytime." I said, which caused him to smile and blush.

"O-okay."

.....

"This is your idea of hanging out?" I asked as he brought out note cards. "Studying?"

"Well I've never really hung out with anyone before." He said as he looked at the ground in embarrassment.

I put my pointer finger under his chin and lifted his head up to where his eyes would meet mine. "You don't have to be embarrassed." I said, to which he smiled slightly. "How about I show you what it's like to hang out with someone?" I suggested, to which he nodded his head.

"Show me how to hang out."
