I entered the school on Monday and immediately headed towards where Carter's locker is. I got to his locker and found him there, moving books as usual.
I rushed up next to him. "Carter, are you okay?"
He looked over at me for one second before looking away. "W-we can't be friends anymore." He said.
I gave him a shocked look. "What?"
He sighed and shut his locker, turning towards me. "I said that we can't be friends." He gave me a pointed look before turning around.
I grabbed his arm before he could walk off and kept him in place. "Come with me."
He shook his head while trying to pull his arm out of my grip. "I can't. We're not allowed to be friends anymore. Now let me go!"
"No!" I said, he looked over at me. "Just come to the bathroom and talk to me, please."
He stared in my eyes for a couple seconds before sighing and heading towards the bathroom. I followed behind him.
We got in the bathroom and checked to make sure no one else was in there before shutting the door and locking it. "Why can't we be friends anymore?" I asked.
He stared at the ground and wouldn't look at me. "Because my parents said so." He said, quietly.
I rolled my eyes. "Of course they did." I sighed before looking at him. "Are you really going to let them control your life like that?" I asked him.
He finally looked up from the ground to meet my eyes. "What do you mean?" He asked.
"You let them trample all over you. Sure, they may be your parents but you have to stand up for yourself. It may be scary but you have to stand up against them." I told him.
He shook his head. "But they're my parents and they deserve my respect."
I scoffed. "They don't deserve your respect! They sure as hell haven't done anything to earn it!"
"But they're my parents-"
"They may be your parents, but they don't act like it. They shouldn't even be called your parents from the way they treat you."
He sighed and looked down at the ground. "I can't stand up against them." He said. "I'm too scared."
.....
It was now lunch time and Carter wasn't in the cafeteria again. I sighed as I headed to the library first this time, to fund him stacking books.
"Hey." I said, causing him to flinch slightly.
"Oh, hey." He responded, turning back to the books.
I looked at the huge pile of books on the cart behind him. "Do you need help?" I asked.
He looked at me for one second before turning back to the books. "No, I'm fine."
I rolled my eyes and sighed as I went over to the cart, grabbing books and putting them on the shelf in what I assumed to be the right order. We went on like that for a few minutes, stacking books on the shelves quietly and Carter occasionally fixing the ones I messed up on. "You know," I said, to which he stopped stacking books to listen to me speak. "Just because you said we can't be friends anymore doesn't mean I'm going to stop trying."
He stared at me for a few seconds before I heard him whisper, more to himself than me. "Good."
I smiled, and he smiled back in return.
"Hello again, Jesse."
I turned around to see the librarian, looking at us. "Hello Miss Whimpy."
She scrunched her face up. "Please call me Cheryl. I may be old but I don't need other people knowing that." She said before looking off somewhere dramatically. "Plus I hate my last name."
I chuckled. "Of course, ma'am." She cleared her throat. "I mean, Cheryl."
"Thank you." She said as she bowed her head at me. She then turned her attention to Carter. "Thanks for the help again today Carter." She thanked him.
"You're welcome." He said, with a smile.
She smiled back at him.
"Why don't you ever smile at me?" I asked. Her smile left her face as she turned back to me.
"You have to earn my smiles, I'm a librarian sweetie." She responded, to which I chuckled but she just kept a clear face as she looked at me.
"Keep up the good work, boys." She said before turning around and walking away.
I turned back to Carter. "She doesn't like me, does she?" I asked to which he smiled slightly.
"She doesn't let just anyone call her by her first name." He told me.
I smiled to myself.
"So, how did your dad even find out where you were on Saturday?" I asked.
He sighed. "He put a tracker in my phone and when he came home early and saw that I wasn't there he checked the tracker. So, that's how."
"He has a tracker in your phone?" I asked, a little angry at that fact.
He nodded his head. "Yeah, my parents put it in there to make sure that I'm always where I'm supposed to be."
"Then why did you bring your phone to my place?" I asked.
"I wanted to get your number."
I nodded my head, remembering that that was one of the main reasons he came over on Saturday. "I could've just wrote it down on a piece of paper." I said after a few minutes.
He shrugged his shoulders. "I didn't really think of that." He said, a little embarrassed.
"It's fine." I responded as I approached him and put my fingers under his chin, lifting his head up so his eyes met mine.
I smiled, before leaning forward to connect our lips. We were inches away when someone cleared their throat from next to us.
We both jumped, Carter more than I, and turned to face Cheryl with a perched eyebrow. "Mhm, friends."
Carter blushed, as I chuckled and scratched the back of my neck.
Cheryl turned around and started to walk away. But before she was too far away, she called out to us...
"If you're going to make out, do it away from the books please."
