Even without Roderick warning her that the Dark Lord was suspicious where her loyalties lied within the families, Elizabeth found herself more worried than she had ever felt before. To see Roderick in such a state when he returned, the fact that he had punished himself with a freezing cold shower until he was numb, she was fearful of the toll that everything was taking on her husband. But she was even more fearful of the idea that there wasn't anything she could do to help him. Every time she tried to reason with him, telling him that they could leave or do something to get away, Elizabeth was immediately met with protest as Roderick practically shouted that they simply couldn't escape.
He didn't yell at her out of anger, but out of the fear that was written clear across his face nearly every time the discussion was brought up. But as if the young couple wasn't facing enough pressure brought on by the Dark Lord, they were facing the trouble with their families that were questioning far too much about the lack of pregnancy between the two of them. Elizabeth could barely ever get a word in among her aunts whenever they questioned if she had truly consummated her marriage with Roderick on the night of her wedding. Of course, as angry as she was to delve into anything personal, she lied and claimed they had engaged in the activity, numerous times since that specific night.
But Elizabeth could tell that they didn't believe her as they all claimed that they had fallen pregnant shortly after their weddings, especially since the Rosier line was known to be quite fertile. Several times, Elizabeth made faces at their stupid remarks, hating the idea of discussing her own fertility with them when it was truly none of their business. So far, there were two things in the world that Elizabeth hated more than anything and it was the discussion of her fertility and the Dark Lord. However, the Dark Lord was reigning when it came to the amount of hate she shared for him.
The way he held fear over Roderick's head left Elizabeth bitter and when Roderick finally confessed that she was being watched closely due to the rumour of her faltering beliefs, she became furious. But she couldn't really deny it, because the Dark Lord did have a right to be suspicious because she did not believe in his ideology. And if Elizabeth was being honest with herself, if it wasn't for Roderick, she would have left ages ago.
She no longer wanted anything to do with her family and she had never cared for the Dark Arts to begin with. She didn't support anything that the Dark Lord stood for, believing he was foolish and condemning those who believed that anything he said was right. How could they believe that his ideology that was fueled solely based on hate would lead them into a better world? She understood that Roderick had been misguided by his older brothers to join the cause, but he was fearful to get out of it, knowing that there would be consequences to follow.
It was for that reason that Elizabeth did not want to bring a child into the mix. Even if she didn't hold the fear of the idea of having sex for the first time, she didn't want it to result in a pregnancy either. She didn't want her child to grow up hearing any of the prejudices that both sides of the families would preach. It would be far too confusing for the child to hear one thing coming from his or her parents and then something completely different from their remaining family members.
