Chapter 3

Alex

I looked around me, searching for the English class when suddenly I tripped and fell, my body landing onto the ground with a thud. Some people around me stifled a laughter, while many just ignored me, which I am thankful for. I felt tears threatening to flow down my cheeks as I slowly got up. I saw a figure in front of me extending a hand and I gratefully accepted it.

The figure pulled me up and smiled at me kindly, "Are you okay?"

I nodded and looked away, afraid to look at him in the eye in case he saw the tears welling up in them.

"So uh, I have to go to my English class now," he mumbled and I nodded. I watched from the corner of my eye as he studied me concernedly before he walked away.

I then realised that he was heading to English class as well and spun around, catching up to him. "Wait!" I yelled and he stopped in his tracks and turned to face me.

When I got to him, I muttered, "My first period's English, too." He smiled and me and motioned me to follow along and I quietly walked behind him. I glanced around and luckily, there wasn't any lockers lined outside the class, which means it was not a déjà vu and I'm safe. Only for the time being, the voice at the back of my head said cheerfully. How optimistic, I replied.

Soon, we reached the classroom which was actually not far from the General Office (which means I went the wrong way) and the boy sat down somewhere at the back on the left while I lingered at the entrance, unsure of where I should sit when I heard a shrill voice from behind me and the sound of heels heading towards my direction.

"What are you doing at the entrance, boy?"

I turned around, noticing a teacher approaching and I mumbled, "I'm the transfer student."

Her tone immediately softened and nodded, causing me to suspect that she was aware of the situation that I had been going through at my old school. The teacher then entered the classroom and slammed the pile of worksheets down on her study desk, causing me to flinch. After that, she motioned for me to enter the class.

"Class, we have a new transfer student," she announced before turning to say, "tell the class your name."

I glanced around nervously at the multiple pairs of eyes that were fixated on me before mumbling, "I'm Alex."

She nodded and patted me on the shoulder encouragingly. "Alright Alex, I'm sure you can go along well with the class! I'm Mrs Jones," she said with a smile before pointing to the empty seat beside the boy who had helped me up earlier. "Please take a seat beside Jack over there."

I went to sit beside Jack, folding my arms to avoid him from seeing my scars. He tried to be friendly with me. "Nice to meet you, Alex," he grinned and I stiffly nodded. As Mrs Jones began the lesson, he attempted to converse with me again but I ignored him, pretending to be paying attention to the lesson. I heard him let out a sigh and I immediately felt a pang of guilt but I didn't say anything. You can't trust anyone in here, Alex. Not even if he helped you.
