Ok. I'm already pissed without even completing this chapter. To let you know, Zuko is my absolute most favorite character in the entire show. He is the most complex, amazing character I've ever seen. In the show, we see his obsession with capturing Aang to "regain his honor," his determination, his fear that someone else will do it first (Zhao, anyone?) and his transformation in season 3 into the person he was meant to be.The film Zuko did not portray him well at all. First thing, (this may sound childish) but the film Zuko isn't very attractive. The real Zuko (according to his wikia page) is the handsome prince of the Fire Nation. How could that actor portray him? Also, WHERE IS THE SCAR?????
For one, its not as noticeable as it should be and its not shaped or colored correctly. What is with that makeup department??? First they screw up a SOLID BLUE ARROW and now they make Zuko's scar look like a mottled sunburn or something. Its hard to describe, sorry.
As for personality, that was a fail too. While Zuko in season 1 had a flaring temper (see what I did there?) and was basically your stereotypical bad-guy, I couldn't help but grow to love his character. His banters with Iroh were hilarious and I enjoyed seeing them interact.
In the movie, we did not see any of that at all. Movie Zuko was really flat and half the things he said made no sense and was out of character. When he goes to the South Pole to find Aang, he yells, "Bring me all your elderly!"
Ummm, ok? That didn't seem to make much sense to me at all. Yeah, Zuko thought the Avatar would be really old, but the Water Tribe's elderly? Zuko doesn't even look at them, before Aang comes out of a tent and goes with Zuko. (More on this scene in a later chapter.)
Also, when Zuko and Iroh are in a Fire Nation colony, Iroh asks him if he still wants to capture the Avatar. Zuko, in response, asks this random boy, to tell him what he knows about the Prince. Zuko pretends to be someone else. The boy vaguely tells of the banishment and we see a flashback of the duel between Zuko and Ozai (though it has none of the tenseness and seriousness of the one in the show).
I though this was really weird because Zuko never wanted to talk about his banishment in the show. Iroh actually told the crew of Zuko's ship why he was obsessed with capturing the Avatar in the same episode Aang tells Katara he ran away. It was a dramatic story and really the first time I felt sorry for Zuko and actually rooted for him half the time.
The movie version of Zuko disgusts me and is an insult to the amazing character that was in the original show. Fun fact: Did you know that Zuko was the last character created for the show? Yeah, the main villain was going to be Ozai, but he didn't seem as much of a direct threat to Aang and his friends if he was on this throne the whole show. So then Zuko was made and thank goodness for that!
Come on! Look at him! He's adorable!
Think that's all I got? Not even close.
