The Mystery of Fire Lord Ozai

Let me explain.

As you know, Ozai the Great and Powerful (heehee) is the ultimate villain. He nearly kills Zuko and then scars his face, banishes his wife, almost kills Zuko again, and basically tries to destroy the world in fire.

Yeah, he's the bad guy's bad guy. So, the creators of the show came up with an awesome way to show Ozai. They never showed his face.

If you don't remember, watch the 1st and 2nd seasons. Ozai was always covered in shadow, surrounded by flames, was a silhouette, or we only saw his back or the lower half of his face. We didn't know what he looked like so we assumed he must be so awful to do the things he did to the world- and his own family.

We expected a monster.

When we finally see his face in season 3, we're like, "Woah! He doesn't look like a bad guy!"

He is a regular guy. And we now know where Zuko got the looks from. It was an amazing way to show that what you expect is not always what you get.

Then we see his madness come out in the season finale and he (spoiler alert) is defeated.

Yeah, the movie totally didn't portray Ozai well at all. The actor was this round-faced, soft-spoken guy (no offense to him) and was about the most non-threatening Ordinary Joe you could find to play a villain. Honestly, we saw too much of him in the film. Ozai was really meant to take a backseat until season 3 but...well...you know what happened.

Movie Ozai was really only there so Zhao could reveal more plot points so there would be no mystery for the viewers. Come on, can't we just see the plot play out or do you have to tell us everything? Seriously, movie Zhao must have revealed his Moon murder plans like three or four times! The show created suspense and at the last second we discovered his evil plan. This whole movie is exposition, exposition, exposition. Really, that's all Ozai was there for.

Also, Ozai was in the Fire Nation and Zhao was following Zuko around the Earth Kingdom. Does it really follow logic that Zhao would go to Ozai repeatedly just to tell him plot points in person? If you really want to contact him, send a messenger hawk for goodness sake! They DO exist in this world!
