As I have mentioned before, in the show (Man, I'm tried of writing that!), Aang teams up with the Ocean Spirit and together they kick butt, use some waves, and end the siege on the North Pole. YAY! And then the Ocean Spirit takes Zhao. Double yay!
And then the movie decided to go on another angle. Boo.
So instead of being AWESOME, movie Aang goes into the Avatar State and raises a HUGE tidal wave with his dance moves higher and higher over the ensuing battle. Everyone pretty much stops what they are doing and stares at the wave. Some dramatic music rises in dramatic-ness and the Fire Nation soldiers on land run towards the wave for some reason (logic is absent). It gets even higher if that's possible and the ships just turn and flee as fast as they can. And the wave- is lowered without crashing on top of anybody.
What a flop.
I mean, come on, what was the point of the wave if Aang wasn't going to crash it on the fleet? I guess it was supposed to scare off the Fire Nation. I don't know if these people are stupid or cowards. Ugh, give me a break.
The whole Ocean Spirit thing in the show was so cool! I mean, look:

The show had so many amazing ideas! Hey, Shyamalan! Why not actually use them!?! *Gasp* Well, that's an interesting notion. Why didn't he think of that? Oh, right.
Judging by the special effects already seen in the movie, the Ocean Spirit would probably suck anyway.
