So Smaug has been living in The Lonely Mountain for the last 60 years. All he knows is the scent of Dwarf and gold. And if you put the scent of a Hobbit in the mountain. I believe that the unfamiliar scent would be easier to follow.
That being said, why did Gandalf think it was a good idea to let Bilbo (the "new scent") into a place where it would be easy for a dwarf (the "old scent") to go in The Lonely Mountain?
