I wish everything just stayed still. I wish nothing changed, but I guess the world doesn't work that way. It's cruel and unfair.
Riley's breathing was slow and steady as her legs were propped up against Sodapop's legs who seemed to be engrossed by Mickey Mouse along with Two-Bit and Steve. The cartoon played on the T.V which gave the boys something to be entertained about. Two-Bit was sitting on the floor, motionless, while eating a piece of chocolate cake that the oldest Curtis made. Johnny was sitting right beside Two, not really paying attention to Mickey Mouse. His mind was else where. Dallas, well, he was nowhere to be found. He was fairly unpredictable, per say. Darry was sat in his usual chair, reading a newspaper. Riley suddenly felt a pang in her heart as her gaze fell on Darrel Curtis. Sometimes the young Winston couldn't believe that he was once the captain of the football team and had been voted Boy of the Year. Actually scratch that, she can believe it. Riley knew that he was a popular guy back in school and now, he's just a boy that was forced to grow up. The boy who had lost his parents too young and now in his care, two young boys that looked up to him to bring home food to the table.
Just a few feet outside the Curtis House, Ponyboy was being trailed by Socs. He looked back as he started jogging towards his house. The Socs were yelling and laughing like they were hunting a deer, except they were hunting a human being. Ponyboy increased his speed but unfortunately, it didn't really help since the Socs had a car. A Chevy Corvair to be exact. Ponyboy knew fast walking was no use when the Corvair pulled up beside him and five Socs got out, making it impossible for the young greaser to escape. He had a good build for a fourteen year old, a few muscles here and there but his figure didn't really compare against these guys. Ponyboy was sweating even though he really didn't notice it until he felt his hands started getting clammy and perspiration ran down his back. He glanced at the ground, trying to find a busted bottle or anything sharp to hold off the Socs, but there was nothing. So he stood there still like a bump on a log while they surrounded him.
"Hey grease," the Soc laughed as he pulled out a blade. "Let's give him a haircut, get him guys."
Riley suddenly sat straight up, hearing a bunch of screams. "Guys do you hear that?" She questioned to no one particular. The room got quiet, the only sound in the air was the sound from the T.V.
"Ponyboy!" Darry exclaimed, shooting straight up from his seat and running towards the door. Everyone jumped up from where they were sitting, following Darry outside in pursuit. Johnny's breath hitched as soon as he saw the Socs. His eyes widened, stopping momentarily, and remembering the beating he took from the Socs a few months back. Two-Bit ran for the car and grabbed a Soc just to be thrown down on the ground. Steve intervened, taking Two-Bit's place in beating up the Soc who was sitting in the passengers side. Sodapop joined in, jumping on the car and going over to the other side to punch the Soc who was driving. Riley ran towards the fight and punched a rich looking kid in the nose. The Soc grabbed Riley's arm attempting to push her off but ended up scratching her arm, making it bleed. Dallas suddenly appeared out of nowhere and threw a large branch to the car which was now driving away. The Socs were yelling 'greasers' and other kinds of profanity, but this just got the boys and Riley all heated up, itching for another fight. Darry immediately ran to Pony's side, not wasting time to scan him for any bruises or cuts. "They didn't hurt you too bad, did they?" Darry asked when he saw the cut in Ponyboy's neck. He started shaking Pony, making the youngest Curtis feel sick and dizzy.
Riley noticed Pony's face and it looked like he was about to throw up. "Darry, I think that's enough." She said with a sigh.
"I'm sorry," Darry mumbled, letting go of Pony.
'He wasn't really. Darry isn't ever sorry for anything he does,' Ponyboy thought.
