Taylor's POV
"You live in Mr Knight's apartment right?" Mr Blake asked me, "y..ye..yeah" I stuttered nervously. He had no idea that I was Mr Knight's student so there was no reason to be nervous but I could not help it. I was always scared that someone could find out and call the cops on Mr Knight or something. If I want to protect him I would have to tell them about my dad.
Paranoid much?
Maybe
"Mr Knight's not picking up, so could you please take him with you" he said to me looking back at the kid who stood a few ways back, staring down at his dirty sneakers.
"What? How do you know this isn't some kind of trick or something" I said to him looking at the kid too. Why would anyone leave a kid in an elevator with a note saying that he was someone's son? It had to be some kind of foul play.
"The kid was left here alone with only a duffel bag and that note and he has no idea where his mum is" he said, "the cameras showed a woman dropping him off but they didn't get a clear view of her."
"So she just...left him" I whispered not believing what he just said. How could a mother just up and leave her child like that. That was inhumane and heartless. In a way, I guess I could relate with the kid. My mother left and did not think twice about it, leaving me to her abusive husband.
I looked back at him again to see him looking at us now with a wide eyed look but when he noticed me looking at him, he immediately looked down at his shoes again. "Okay" I agreed, it was not my decision to make anyway. It was Damon's to make, this was supposedly his son after all.
Mr Blake motioned for the other security man who was with the kid to bring him over.
"This is Taylor" he said to the kid kneeling down to his level and looking up at me, "she's going to take you up to her apartment now okay" he told the little boy. He only nodded in response.
I took the duffel bag from the security man then held out my hand to the kid. "Come on" I said to the kid with a smile on my face. He stared at my hand for a while as if contemplating whether to take it or not but he finally did.
"So what's your name?" I asked, getting tired of calling him kid in my head. It took a while but I finally heard him whisper, "Nolan."
"Nolan it's very nice to meet you" I said lamely, smiling down at him hoping he will stop being so guarded. The elevator finally stopped and we walked out, down the hallway and got to Damon's apartment.
"You can come in" I said gently when he remained outside after I opened the door and went in. He stood outside staring into the apartment, eyes darting about. I waited patiently while coaxing him to come in. He finally stepped in cautiously, tightening his grip on his teddy.
I placed his bag by the couch along with mine moving into the kitchen. "You must be hungry, what would you like to eat? Chicken or pi..." I was going to ask but I was cut off by him. "Where's my daddy?" he whispered softly staring up at me.
This was the first time he had lifted up his head to stare at me. The first thing I noticed was his green eyes, just like...just like Damon's. They were beautiful. I almost did not need any further convincing that he was Damon's son. But I also noticed something else.
Those green eyes were haunted; there was something about them, something...dark. It looked like he had gone through a lot. They were not lively and full of life like Damon's. I know that look; I've seen it before.
I did not like it.
He looked so cautious and uncomfortable and scared. Not just because he was in a new environment with so many new faces. I could tell it was something more.
"Your daddy will be home soon" I told him. "Now" I said kneeling down to his level, "would you rather have chicken or pizza?" I asked trying to sound excited, hoping that would peek his interest. Every kid loves pizza right?
I was right. When I said those words I saw a twinkle in his eye making them look less...haunted and he bit down on his lip as if trying to hide a smile. He nodded his head vigorously, agreeing to pizza.
"Great, I'll order" I clapped standing up and going to the phone to order. After ordering our dinner I looked back at Nolan to find him still standing in the same spot and still looking at everything around him.
"Come sit" I said patting the space next to me on the couch after I sat down. "You like cartoons?" I asked after he sat down next to me. He nodded his head slowly so I put it on Nickelodeon.
"So, how old are you Nolan?" I asked trying to make conversation, "six years old" he whispered. My guess was not far off.
I kept prodding him with questions from his favorite color to his favorite food and slowly he started opening up. He was not whispering anymore. We even argued about which teenage mutant ninja turtle was the best.
Nolan so happens to love Raphael when we all know Mikey is the best.
Our pizza finally arrived and we had dinner together. Damon wasn't back yet and I doubt he has any idea about Nolan who was currently splayed across my lap, sleeping.
He was an adorable little boy.
In the middle of an episode of blackish, I heard the door open. Damon came in, looking tired and angry. I guess Mr Blake was finally able to get him.
"Shhh" I whispered when he slammed the door close. I immediately looked down at Nolan to see if he had woken up but he was still sound asleep. Damon gave me a confused look placing his keys in his pocket, walking closer to the couch.
"Who is this?"
