"Taylor! Wait up!" I heard someone yell in the school hallway. I stopped walking and turned around to see Drew jogging to catch up with me, the crowd creating a path for him.
"Hey," he said once he stopped in front of me. "Hey," I said turning around and going back to searching for Ashen.
"Mind if I sit with you?" He asked as he fell into stride next to me. "Sure," I answered slightly confused. He normally had lunch with Logan and his crew.
Why would he give up hanging with the popular crowd to hang out with me?
Whatever it was, I didn't mind as long as Ashen didn't mind. After all I did promise that I would try to forgive Drew.
"So what..." He was cut off by someone yelling his name. Amy Carpenter came into view as the ocean of students created a path for her like she was some goddess, which she was around here.
"Drreeww" she yelled coming up to us and throwing herself at him. "Baby I've missed you," she whined pulling away with her arms still wrapped his neck and his arms sitting awkwardly on her hips.
"We saw each other like an hour ago," he told her pulling her arms away from his neck. "So? Doesn't mean I can't still miss you," she giggled and tried to place a kiss on his lips but he turned away so she kissed his cheek and that was when she finally noticed me.
"We were just heading out to lunch," Drew told her once he noticed her staring at me. "Oh!" She said with a giggle, staring between the both of us.
"How about you join us at our table instead?" she offered while wrapping her hands around Drew's arm as she smiled down at me with a fake smile on her face and a barely restrained look of anger in her eyes.
Hell no!
There was no way in hell I would ever go near that table, the "popular table," and her offer didn't seem so sincere either.
"No, thank you," I declined politely, "I have to go find Ashen."
"How about you and...Ashen join us?" She offered, and I had to count to ten in my head to keep from lashing out at her.
"Yeah," Drew voiced from next to her.
This was the girl who along with her friends had made the first few months of Ashen's life here a living hell. He was the new kid who was also gay, so they felt an obligation to make his life miserable.
That was how we met.
Ashen had endured another filled day of torture and I walked in on him crying his heart out at the back of the school. I wasn't having it easy either then. We bonded over that and became best friends. Slowly they lost interest in humiliating us but we were left with the tag, "freaks" for the rest of our highschool lives.
I would never subject my best friend to such a thing. I would never subject my friend to the torture of having lunch with them. Not that I would do it either.
"Maybe some other time," I said and quickly walked away before she could say anything else.
'Where the hell are you?' I sent to Ashen as I left the library. I had run out of places to look.
'Not in school I'll tell you all about it later,' he replied.
That was strange.
'What happened? Are you o...' I couldn't finish typing my message because someone ran into me and knocked my phone out of my hand.
I closed my eyes as I groaned out loud. I had no money to get a new one if it broke and it was already new. One of the many things Damon got me that I was working hard to repay.
"I'm sorry, and we've got to stop meeting like this," I heard Damon chuckle and when I opened my eyes, he was holding out my phone with an amused smirk on his face. "Thank you" I said taking the phone from him and trying my hardest not to blush. The familiar tingles were making an appearance again.
"So, why aren't you having lunch with the rest of the student body?" He asked sounding genuinely curious. "I was actually just looking for Ashen but apparently, he isn't in school." I said waving my phone in his face.
"Have you eaten yet?" He asked, "no" I answered. "Come on, you can have lunch with me," he offered as he began walking towards his classroom and I followed.
"Ladies first," Damon said with a bow holding the classroom door open for me. "What a gentleman," I joked moving into the classroom and laughing at the gesture.
He got out his lunch which was food from McDonalds and shared it with me. I took it gratefully seeing as school food wasn't so great.
I don't really remember much of what we talked about but it went from the weather to school to movies to other stuff and somehow we got to Nolan.
"You still haven't told me anything about his mother." I said without thinking. The words just flew out of my mouth like I had no control over my own tongue.
"Um..." He cleared his throat putting down his burger. He looked very unsure of whether or not to tell me. I wanted to take it back and tell him not to bother but I said nothing.
I think he was stalling just to see if I would take it back but I did no such thing.
"We can talk about this another time." He said standing up from his seat and placing the chair where it belonged.
"No," I stood up from my chair walking behind him as he went to his desk. He let out a loud sigh as he tidied up his desk trying not to meet my eyes.
"You promised to tell me all about her," I reminded him. I needed to know. I needed to know who Nolan's mother was. I needed to know why he never made sure Nolan was actually his son. Why was he working at a highschool when his father was really rich?
There were so many questions I needed answers to.
I've lived with him for months now but he was still a big mystery to me.
"Is he really your son?" I whispered. "Yes," he answered without hesitation as he stopped messing around with the papers on his desk. That answers one question.
"What about his mother?" I asked firmly. "Tay..." He was going to say but got cut off by the sound of the bell.
Literally saved by the bell.
I saw the relief and happiness that flooded his face at the sound of the bell. Like hell we were done talking about this.
"We're not done here," I said picking up my bag. I had no idea where that sudden burst came from but right now I didn't care.
Like hell I was going to drop it.
