So Close

I choked back tears, my bare back pressing against James' skin.

It was for Tom.

Listening closely to James' breathing, I decided he was finally asleep. With his rhythmic breathing and soft snores, there was no way I would wake him up.

I grasped the metal key in my hand, carefully lifting myself out of the bed. I pulled on my boxers and jeans, and-

"Hmm," James moaned quietly.

I froze.

I waited.

I listened.

James' breathing continued to slow, his snores returning.

Forget the shirt.

Quietly, but quickly, I scurried out of the bedroom.

My heart was beating so loud, I was surprised it wasn't waking the whole neighborhood up.

My fingers trembled as I pushed the key into the slot. I carefully turned the knob to the front door, taking the key with me.

Shutting the door behind me, I slipped the key around my neck, it's cold metal sending shivers down my bare chest.

Darting around, I bolted down the steps, the midnight breeze chilling my skin.

"HELP! HELP ME!" I screamed.

I expected there to be other houses nearby, a paved street, perhaps some kind of night gang.

There was none of that. Just an open field, grass, and a dirt path.

I ran as quickly as I could down the dirt path, trying my best to control my breathing.

"PLEASE, SOMEBODY!" I yelled to the stars.

Surveying my surroundings, I could see the lights of some kind of suburban area to the North. Who knows how long it'll take me to run over there.

I never really thought this part through. I figured I wouldn't be able to bring myself to actually sleep with James, yet I did. Now I'm here.

"FUCK!" I yelled, kicking the gravel beneath me. "FUCK, FUCK, FUCK!"

Turning around, I watched in horror as one of the lights of that dreaded home turned on.

The yellow glow poured out of the window, like a large sign to run.

Run as fast as you can, and never look back.

I bolted, my legs carrying me as quickly as they could.

Figuring the dirt path would lead me to a city of some kind, I followed it.

I tried to listen for James, but all I could hear was my heavy breathing and crickets.

Where's James?

Did the house light actually turn on, or was that my imagination?

I reluctantly turned around, facing the house once more.

All the lights were on at this point, the front door wide open, no sign of James anywhere.

I screwed up.

Darting down the path, I hoped I had gotten a good headstart.

My legs pounded against the Earth beneath me, sweat began to drip down my forehead. Head racing, I realized I haven't had this much physical activity in a while. I've been cooped up in that house for at least three weeks, if not more.

I can outrun James, right?

I glanced behind me, watching two bright headlights come closer towards me.

A truck door slammed close behind me.
