"Where are you going?" I croaked out into the silent air.
"Downstairs to sleep on the couch," Tom mumbled. "I'll be down there if you need anything."
"Wait, please Tom. Don't leave me in here by myself."
"It's not working, Jordan. You've been having nonstop nightmares for the past three days," Tom ranted, rubbing the sleep out of his eyes.
"I know, but-"
"You weren't having them in the hospital, so why now?" Tom asked, his voice raising.
"I don't know-"
"I know! I remind you of James, don't I?"
"No, Tom-"
"Don't I?" Tom began to yell. My body flinched, I pulled my arms up in defense.
Tom sighed, running his fingers through his messy hair.
"I'm sorry..." I whispered, holding back tears.
I wanted him to crawl back into bed, and hold me close to his body. I wanted him to rub my back and tell me everything will be okay. Instead he just stood there, clutching a blanket to his chest. I could only imagine the thoughts going through his head.
"I just..." he sighed.
"What?"
"I just want things to go back to normal."
"You don't think I want that too?" I asked.
"You sure don't act like you want it," Tom muttered, puffing his chest out.
"I'm trying, Tom," I defended myself.
"You're not trying very hard! You push me away every time I try to help you! You insist that I'm some evil person, you look at me like I'm James, but I'm not! I'm not him, I'm not evil!" he yelled, tears poking at the corners of his eyes. "I'm tired of it, Jordan... I want to help."
"I need time though!" I retaliated. "You expect me to get out of a house full of rape and abuse, and just be fine and dandy?"
"No, I never expected that. But I didn't expect I'd have to treat you more like a child rather than my boyfriend."
"I didn't ask for you to treat me like a child. I didn't ask for you t-to take care of me!" I yelled.
"Oh, so you don't want my help anymore?"
"No, I didn't say that... I just.. God! I j-just-" I stuttered, my face heating up. "You're yelling at me for how I'm acting, but none of this would've happened if you would've just been there for me!"
"Excuse me?" Tom asked, stepping back a little.
"If you would've been there for me, and if you would've realized that I was gone, that I was- just... You didn't find me! You didn't even try!" I yelled, trying to find the right words.
"You don't think I was trying? I spent three months doing nothing but searching for you Jordan, and now I'm spending another two months helping you through court!" Tom shouted. "How do you have the nerve to sit there, and tell me I'm not trying?"
"YOU AREN'T TRYING! YOU NEVER WERE!" I yelled, slamming my fists against the mattress.
"Am I not good enough for you, is that it?" Tom shouted.
"No, you're not!"
"Then find someone else who is," Tom's stern voice said, calmly.
"W-What?"
"Take your shit and leave!" Tom's voice rose again, as he threw his blanket to the ground. "I'm tired of doing this with you! I'm tired of waking up at 3 a.m. to help you calm down from a bad dream, only to be punched because you think I'm him!"
I watched in awe, as Tom paced around the room.
"I'm tired of you staring at me like I'm the monster! I'm tired of going to hospitals and court rooms!"
Tears began to fall out of his eyes.
"I just want my boyfriend back," he whispered, slouching against the wall.
I pushed myself off the bed, quickly pulling the charger away from my phone. I scurried to shove some shorts and t-shirts into an empty backpack Tom had laying near his desk.
"What are you doing?" Tom mumbled, looking up at me.
"Listening to you."
