"I will now pass sentence of the verdict. I agree with the jury on the verdict of guilt, and hereby sentence James Hayes to a fine of fifteen thousand dollars."
I quickly glanced over to the opposite side of the room, my heart beating out of my chest.
The old man's face was bright red, but H̸̭̮̮̩̽e̶̛͔͎̲͈̱͆̄͂̉͗̅̂̎͝ looked completely content. It looked as if nothing was wrong, nothing could get him down.
"All rise," the judge's voice boomed. I had to remain seated, my cast restricting me from moving. The powerful judge carefully stood, exiting the court room.
The shuffle of feet filled the air, as everyone began to file out of the court room. I could hear the snapping of cameras and lots of talk coming from the hallway. Probably paparazzi.
"He's gonna get a lot more than just fifteen thousand bucks. He's gonna get life in prison after our case is done," Ingrid whispered to me, as she gathered her things.
My eyes were glued to an officer, who was securing handcuffs on my captor, forcing him to stand.
Ingrid stood by my side as we watched the sheriff usher him out of the room.
"You good?" Ingrid whispered, grasping the handles on my chair.
"Um... Yeah," I mumbled.
This all went so fast. It wasn't anything I expected it to be, but I know it's going to be worse when our prosecution case comes up.
Our prosecution case.
I'm going to have to stand up there and tell a room full of strangers how weak I was. How pathetic I am, how I had to be rescued from a house full of abuse and rape.
Shaking the thought from my head, I tried to focus on the events surrounding me now. Mark, Sonja, and Tucker scurried down the hall, making their way towards me.
Sonja engulfed me in a warm hug, while Mark pushed warm tears away from the corners of his eyes.
"I'm on your side," Mark whispered to me, leaning down to embrace me.
"Ethan's waiting by the car, we'll meet you guys at the hospital," Ingrid said from behind me, slowly rolling my chair forward.
My friends disappeared in to the crowd of blurry faces and bright lights.
Cameras flashed like lightning in a stormy sky. A guard walked in front of me, but that didn't stop the flood of microphones and cameras being shoved into my face.
Adrenaline pumped through my veins, as sweaty bodies bumped against me, rattling my chair.
I tried to search the crowd for Tom, Sonja, anyone... Instead I saw fuzzy silhouettes of news casters, as they pointed their fake, toothy grins towards the cameras.
Questions merged together, words made no sense.
Ingrid said it'd be overwhelming, but this is worse. This is a tornado of craziness, a hurricane of madness.
I've had people recognize me in public, and ask for a few pictures before. That I was used to.
I wasn't used to this.
"Mr. Maron, what was it like?"
"Mr. Maron, look this way!"
"Mr. Maron, how does it feel to win the case?"
"Mr. Maron, were you really afraid for your life?"
"How should we believe you?"
"Mr. Maron, this way!"
"Just look straight ahead," Ingrid's voice was like a beacon in the dark. "We'll be out soon."
I want it to stop.
"Mr. Maron!"
Please, stop.
"Mr. Maron, what did James do to you?"
Please.
"Mr. Maron, will you ever return to Youtube?"
I'm begging you.
"Mr. Maron, are you happy to be alive?"
Help me.
"Mr. Maron!"
Their voices seemed to rise.
"MR. MARON!"
"MR. MARON!"
Stop yelling at me.
"MR. MARON, SMILE FOR THE CAMERA!"
"MR. MARON, OVER HERE!"
Ingrid, please...
"MR. MARON!"
Get me out of here.
