"You're not okay? You're not okay!" he yelled.
My body jerked as his hand swiftly glided across my face.
"Am I not good enough for you, is that it?" he screamed.
"No, it's just-"
"AM I NOT GOOD ENOUGH?"
"Stop, please-"
"JORDAN, ANSWER ME DAMNIT!"
Another slap.
"Stop hurting me!"
"You don't love me, you never did," he spat.
Tears filled my eyes as his warm mucus ran down the side of my face.
I tried to reach up to wipe at my face, but my hands were restricted behind my scrawny torso.
"You asked for this," he hissed, holding up a shiny blade.
"No, wait please-"
"You asked for it."
He swung the blade into my thigh.
"JAMES WAIT!" I cried out, opening my eyes. My body convulsed as I sat up in the bed, pain erupting through my leg.
I reached into the dark, grasping at the phantom knife I had thought was there.
"Jordan, Jordan, it's okay. You're okay," Tom's scruffy voice said, his trembling hands rubbed against my back.
"I'm sorry," I cried, using my right hand to push the tears out of my eyes.
"You don't need to apologize. It was just a dream, okay?"
"Okay," I whispered, swallowing back sobs.
"You wanna talk about it?" Tom cooed, gently resting his chin against my shoulder.
"Not really."
"Okay. That's okay."
"I'm sorry."
"Jordan, it's okay."
"No, it's not."
Tom quietly peeled his warm hands away from my torso, leaving my skin exposed to the cool, midnight air. I listened to his breathing as he adjusted the covers, fluffing them up around our bodies.
"I can sleep on the couch if it would help with the nightmar-"
"No," I desperately interrupted. "I would feel better with you in here."
"Okay," Tom whispered, tracing patterns across my spine.
"I'm sorry I woke you up," I let out a heavy sigh.
"That's alright. Just spooked me is all," Tom said, propping up his pillows against the headboard.
Warm tears poked at the corners of my eyes.
"Come here," Tom whispered, extending his arm.
I scooted closer to him, burying myself in the protection of his cotton tee.
"Don't apologize for things that aren't your fault," Tom whispered.
"But that was my fault, I woke you up."
"It's not your fault you have nightmares."
"Yes it is."
"Jordan. Do you really think you'd give yourself those nightmares every night, just for fun?"
I remained silent, unsure of how to answer.
"No. You don't want those nightmares, I can tell by the way you're screaming," he said, a layer of sadness behind his words. "You aren't at fault here, okay?"
I nodded against him, finally able to relax my shoulders. With that relaxation, came my downfall. The protective wall I had built for myself had been torn down, tears streamed down my face.
Despite Tom's soothing words, I was never lulled back to sleep that night.
