Ray's Pov
"So, what's your name?" I asked the driver. He winked at me and turned his eyes back to the road. He sighed slightly and said,
"The name's Zee."
"My name is Ray," I said uncertainly. Should I be telling him my name? But what have I got to lose? There was nothing but Ash that I had got to lose and I wouldn't for my life give him up.
"Where are we?" I asked, looking around at the grassland features of wherever I was. Zee looked a bit troubled as he said,
"We're in Australia."
"Australia?" I questioned, not really sure whether he was joking or not. I felt numb suddenly; I felt no shock.
"Yeah, Australia," Zee said, his voice uneasy. He was scratching the back of his neck which meant that he was nervous. He didn't even seem to realize that he was talking to me.
"Zee, is something wrong?" I asked finally, getting a little annoyed my his nervousness.
He stopped the tractor and I heard the engine's noise shut down. Zee motioned me towards the door quietly and with a silent question of why in my mouth, I climbed out of the vehicle. Zee did the same and came over to me and crouched down, indicating for me to imitate him as well.
"What's going-?" I started to ask when Zee answered my previous unanswered question,
"Something is very wrong, mate."
I felt shivers climb up my spine and held Ash close to my chest. He looked somewhat peaceful in his coma and for a moment, I felt a kind of pain enter my heart on seeing his plight. But I would make sure he came back to me. After whatever was wrong.
There was a sudden roar and I looked upwards from where it was coming from. I froze on seeing something huge glide like a bird down towards us. It was like a warning bell that came from my hand, but suddenly the Heafi Mark on my palm started burning into my flesh and I fought hard to keep the yelp of pain down. My vision was suddenly tinted with yellow and Zee who was staring at me with wide eyes exclaimed in a soft voice,
"Your eyes 've turned yellow. You a Heafi?"
There was no need for any explanation. Zee was a Heafi like me. I saw his warm brown eyes turn a shade of blue so light, it could pass off as silver. He stared at me and then turned his gaze upwards to the huge thing that was flying overhead.
"What is it?" I hissed at him. Zee did not look at me but replied, "That's an Icejay. They are like dragons but instead of breathing fire, they breathe-"
"Ice," I finished for him. Just as I said the word, the Icejay swept down and roared again. And suddenly, out of its mouth, came a huge block of ice that would have crushed me to bits weren't it for Zee. He grabbed hold of my hand and together we threw ourselves to the side. I groaned as I landed on the sleeping Ash.
"Oh my God," I whispered and caressed Ash's hair away from his closed eyes. His eyes seemed to flutter a bit but then the motion was gone and I wondered whether I had imagined it. I leaned down and brushed my lips against his wanting so badly to kiss him hard and forget about the whole Heafi thing. About being a Heafi, Jazz, and the Icejay...
