I was sitting in the common room with Harry and Jonny. Ron had a detention and Hermione was in the Library studying as usual. Jonny was in my lap, sleeping like a kitten. Harry looked at the time and got up.
"I have a lesson with Professor Lupin now. You wanna come?" Harry asked.
"Yeah, why not. I don't have anything better to do" I said. He smiled and I placed Jonny in one of his many webs around the common room. We were walking to Lupins office I couldn't stop thinking about what was said at the Three Broomstix. My powers aren't that extraordinary. I mean you can do the same things with a wand right? Unless he knows someone about me that I don't. Perhaps I could talk to McGonagall. But then she would know I was there. I suppose I could be very subtle about it. That I'm just curious about my past...I almost wanted to speak to Harry about this and ask for advice but..he doesn't know about my powers. Plus I'm sure his mind is already racing with the fact that his godfather is trying to kill him! No, I think I'll stay quiet about all this. We had just reached the DADA room when the door flew open and Revealed Professor Lupin standing there smiling.
"Hello Harry, Evangeline are you joining this lesson too?" He asked.
"If I'm allowed sir. I wouldn't want to intrude in your lesson" I said politely.
"No, no of course you won't intrude come on in. Besides, Harry might need some help sometime" He said and Harry and I walked in. There was a rattling chest inside.
"Now are you sure about this? This is very advanced magic way beyond the ordinary wizarding level" Lupin asked.
"I'm sure" Harry said.
"Now the spell I am going to try to teach you is called a patronus charm. Did you ever hear of it?" Lupin asked. Harry shook his head. Lupin turned to me.
"I've briefly read about it" I answered. He nodded.
"Well Harry, the patronus is a kind of positive force and for the wizard who can conjure one it works something like a shield with the dementor feeding of it rather than him" Lupin explained. "But in order for it to work you need to think of a memory. Not just any memory, a very happy memory. A very powerful memory. Can you do this?" Lupin said. Harry and I nodded. "Very well, close your eyes...concentrate...explore your past...do you have a memory? Allow it to fill you up...lose yourself within it then speak the incantation 'Expecto Patronum'" He said.
"Expecto Patronum" Harry and I said together.
"Very good" Lupin said. I opened my eyes. "Shall we?" Lupin asked. "Harry, you first. Wand at the ready" Harry raised his wand and Lupin opened the chest. Out flew a dementor.
"Expecto Patronum" Harry said but nothing happened. "Expecto...expect" Harry tried but he fainted again.
"Harry!!" I yelled as I ran to his side. His eyes fluttered open after a moment.
"Come on, sit up, there we go" Lupin said as Harry slowly hoisted himself up. "I didn't expect you to do it the first time. That would have been remarkable" Lupin said. He reached into his pocket and grabbed some chocolate out and handed it to Harry "Here eat this. You'll feel better" he said.
"That's one nasty Dementor" Harry said.
"That was a boggart Harry. The real thing will be worse, much, much worse" Lupin said. "Evangeline, why don't you have a go" He said. I nodded
"Okay" I said unsurely and stepped forward.
"Think of a memory...got it?" He asked. I nodded and raised my wand. He opened the chest again and my mind travelled back to our first encounter on the train and the feeling of fear that washed over me, and out flew the dementor. I thought of the time I first stepped foot on the grounds of Hogwarts.
"Expecto Patronum!" I yelled but nothing happened, just like Harry. "Expecto Patronum!" I tried again. I only felt a slight warmth in my palm but nothing else. It flew towards me and my vision went black and all I could see were visions of my mother and I...in a dark room. So dark I could only see the outline of her face. She was holding me, crying and singing as she rocked me back and forth. "Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye my love"
Was this a dream?.. Or a memory..
When I came to I saw a silvery light bursting out of Harry's wand. He did it.
"Here eat this" Lupin said handing me some chocolate. "Well done Harry! Well done!" Lupin praised.
"I think I've had enough for today" Harry said. Lupin handed him some more chocolate.
"Just so you know Harry, I think you would have given your father a run for his money and that's saying something" Lupin said.
"I was thinking of him and mum, seeing their faces. They were talking to me. Just talking. That's the memory I chose. I don't even know if it's real but it's the best I have" Harry said.
"Professor, can I please have another go?" I asked, pushing aside everything I had just seen. "I have another memory I want to try" I said.
"Of course Evangeline, of course" He said walking over to the chest. "Are you sure you're ready?" He asked. I took a deep breath.
"Yes" I said. I raised my wand and Lupin opened the chest. I thought hard, of my mother singing me my lullaby, of us in the park chasing and catching butterflies, of us...together and happy.
"EXPECTO PATRONUM!!" I yelled and my hand began to feel warm again, warmer than before. It seemed like energy was running through my hand into my wand and out their other end. It was so strong my hand wanted to let go of my wand but I held on tight. If I let go the charm will stop. I forced the dementor back in the chest.
"Excellent, Excellent!!" Lupin said. "Great job you two!" He said. "Same time next week?" he said. We nodded. We walked toward the door when I stopped.
"Hey Harry you go, I'll catch up" I said. He gave me a questioning look.
"Okay, don't be too long" He said and walked out.
"Excuse me Professor?" I asked.
"Yes Evangeline" He said.
"Did you happen to-to know my mother?" I asked. He instantly stopped what he was doing and faced me.
"Where did that come from?" He asked.
"I thought about her. About us. I don't remember exactly any memories I have of her, but I know there must be some somewhere" I said. "And I thought since you knew James and Black and Black knew my mother that maybe you knew her too?" I said. He went pail when I mentioned Black's name. He sighed deeply.
"Yes I knew your mother. She was the kindest girl in our year. She was the only one other than James, Sirius and Peter that knew-" He stopped fearing he said too much.
"That you're a werewolf?" I finished for him. He looked at me.
"How did you know?" he asked.
"Well after Snape set that essay I recognised some of the symptoms and you're boggart...is a full moon" I said "Don't worry, I won't tell anyone" I said He smiled. "Since I know one of your secrets, wanna know one of mine?" I asked.
"Sure" He said.
"I'm an unregistered animagus" I said. He smiled.
"Can I see?" He asked. I smiled.
"Of course" I said. I changed into my animagus form and Lupin patted my head. I changed back.
"Incredible, Just like your mother. She was a snow leopard animagus. They're very rare" He said and I smiled and clutched my necklace. "What's that?" He asked. I took it off from around my neck and showed him.
"It's a locket. It has my mother's picture inside. When I open it, it plays the lullaby she used to sing to me to get me to sleep" I explained.
"It's getting late, you should go"' He said.
"goodnight Professor" I said walking towards the door.
"Goodnight Evangeline" He said.
I was lying in my bed studying the necklace. Everyone in the dorm was asleep so I opened it. Out rung my a beautiful melody of my lullaby and I drifted into a dreamless sleep.
