"So what are you?" She asked me, confusion consuming her face.
We sat in my underground cave, amidst the blossoms and the deep blue moon pool. I stared at our reflections in the pool, her long blonde hair resting perfectly on her shoulders and her blue eyes almost matching the hue of the water. My dark skin seemed even more flawless than usual and my ebony hair cascaded downwards effortlessly. The moon pool had always seemed to emphasise one's beauty, even my light grey eyes seemed to be glimmering.
"Part werewolf, part vamp- " I started to answer her questions before she had interrupted me. She had made a clear habit of it now.
"So you're one of Klaus's hybrids?" She asked.
I scoffed. A hybrid, I'd rather die a thousand and one times over.
"Oh Caroline, when will you learn to let me finish my sentences? I am nothing like Niklaus's naïve attempts at a pseudo-family. If you had let me finish, you would learn that I am also part witch and part human"
She stared at me in awe causing an uncontrollable smirk to land on my face. Her reaction was priceless. They always were.
"But that's impossible" I rolled my eyes at her. Despite being an immortal being herself, things still surprised her. Try as I might, this was the one reaction that remained unfathomable to me.
"Yet here I am. You live in a world of vampires, doppelgangers, werewolves and witches, yet you still think there is such a thing as an impossibility?"
"But how can you exist?" She asked, I was tiresome of all the questions I would constantly be plagued with once revealing my true nature.
"For the life of me I could not tell you. I'm yet to find a name for myself or another person like myself" I shrugged.
She smiled at me before her smile changed into a perplexed frown. "What's wrong, my lovely?"
"Why tell me? You say you care about me and blah, blah, blah, but you never say why" I sighed and turned back towards the moon pool.
"You're different. You're honest and upfront. And you remind me of someone I used to know, once upon a time." I flinched at the memory of her. "On top of all that, you care for Niklaus and he for you" I finished quickly.
"Oh no. I don't care about Klaus" She said through gritted teeth making me laugh.
"You sound like me. I've been around a long time Caroline and I'm fairly convinced that there is no stronger force than that of denial. Or fear." I looked at Caroline and she turned away blushing.
"Let's say, hypothetically, that I did have a tiny place in my heart for Klaus. What's it to you? Trying to warn me away from him? Because I know, I've heard it all before. He's, well he's Klaus" She said laughing.
I laughed along with her and pulled her into a tight hug. "You're wrong by the way. About Niklaus."
She scoffed. "And how would you know?"
"He is my husband after all." Caroline pushed away from me.
"What do you mean he's your husband?" She looked scared, I somewhat enjoyed her fear, it reassured me of what I already knew: I was unstoppable and a force to be reckoned with.
"Exactly what I said my love. Niklaus and I are married." She fled to the entrance of the cave, the fear in her eyes spreading.
"Are you here to kill me then? Because I won't go down without a fight. Besides Klaus came after me, I didn't know he was married, let alone to someone like you, I- "
I sped up to her and looked her in the eye. I may have enjoyed her fear temporarily but I cared deeply for her. More than I cared to admit. She was so much like Luna, it hurt. But she wasn't and unlike Niklaus, I wasn't prepared to just let people replace her. There could only be one.
"No need to be afraid poppet, if I wanted you dead, you would be already." She laughed nervously, still keeping her distance.
"Okay, but why? Why help me with your husband? Don't you love him?" I sighed heavily.
"More than words will ever be able to express but he clearly loves you and above all, I want Niklaus to be happy. Plus, he wasn't exactly the best husband." Thinking back to all those times Niklaus had hurt me almost beyond repair.
"What did he do? Can't have been that bad if you still love him so much."
"Well let's see shall we, the countless affairs, the innumerable amount of dead bodies and let's not forget the time he tried to put a dagger in me." Caroline's ears perked up.
"How would that even work? Aren't you only part vampire?" I smiled brightly at her, I did love when people knew their stuff. Gives me hope that no matter how stupid the world became, there was always someone left to pass on their intelligence.
"You catch on very quickly. Whilst that may be true, I assume it's just my weakness. I can't be staked by white oak or otherwise, I am truly immortal through and through. However, it means that when I am daggered, I feel an unbearable pain. I'm awake for all of it, just immobile. Ugh, I feel like dying just thinking about it"
Caroline looked at me with a look full of pity, further solidifying my belief in her character. She was a good person.
"Your husband did that to you, multiple times, and you still love him? Klaus did that to you? His wife? I don't know who's crazier." I laughed at her.
"You're quite brave aren't you? Calling me crazy right to my face?" She just laughed.
"No, well yes but I only said that to you because I know you don't want to hurt me" She said smugly causing me to roll her eyes.
"You're right, I don't. But I'm not always so soft. And to answer your question, Niklaus didn't know. He still doesn't. As far as Niklaus is concerned, I'm as susceptible to death as he is."
"Why didn't you tell him?"
"Never had the words to say. I also wasn't the very best wife either, I started the chain of destruction in our marriage. I'm not sure how we lasted as long as we did" I told her sighing sadly.
She looked at me with an intense gaze.
"C'mon love, what it is it?" I asked her
"You should be with him. You two were meant to be. I can tell." I laughed at her.
"You sound like a horoscope. There's no such thing. And I'll prove it to you. Let's go pay my husband a visit shall we?" She looked scared again. But it was different this time.
"You've been running from him for nearly a century, are you sure you want to risk all that to prove a point?" She cared about me. It had been a long time since I felt anyone had.
"Niklaus has made it his mission to hunt me down till the end of time, he was bound to find me eventually. But thank you, for caring about my well-being, I truly appreciate it." I smiled at her and she perked up. "Now let's go and pay my deranged husband a visit." I said taking her hand as we darted off to the mansion.
"Who is it now?" The sound of Niklaus instantly made me smile. I hadn't heard his gruff voice in a long time, it was comforting. It felt like home.
He opened the door and I took a deep breath, preparing myself to see my husband for the first time in over a hundred years.
"Hello Niklaus."
