Ollie's POV
I bursts through the doors of NICU, and see a crowd of doctors surrounding Penny.
"Zosia," I pant, "have they done it yet?"
"I asked them to wait until you got here, I wanted you to be here when she opens her eyes." Zosia replied, coming and standing next to me.
"Are we alright to start now Miss March?" One of the doctors asks.
Zosia nods, and the doctors start the process of waking Penny up. (I won't go into detail, because I don't know a lot about comas.)
"She should start to come round soon." The doctor explains. "We'll leave you in peace now, but if you tell a nurse when she's awake, and we'll be back to run some tests." He says, before they all leave, leaving us alone with Penny, the other babies in the room, and a nurse doing obs in the corner.
We go and sit with Penny; one of us either side of her, and we both hold her hand. She looks so frail and vulnerable, just lying there, nothing like the baby girl who never laid still, not even when she was asleep.
"Earth to Ollie." Zosia says, snapping me out of my daydream.
"Sorry, I was miles away." I apologise.
"What's wrong?" She asks. "I mean, apart from the obvious."
"What if she's not the same Zosh?" I ask. "What if she's got permanent brain damage?"
"But she won't Ollie. The doctors said that her last brain scan was clear, and that they're almost certain she'll be fine. And if she's not, then we'll deal with it, together, because you and me Ollie, we're a team, and we can get through anything."
"You always know how to cheer me up, don't you Zosh." I smile.
"Just one of my many talents." She laughs.
Suddenly, Penny starts to move, and me and Zosia both grab each others hand as she starts to wake up.
"Nurse, nurse she's waking up." I call. The nurse rushes over, and takes out the breathing tube, resulting in a strong cry from Penny.
Zosia starts to cry, and I start to well up too. A cry has never meant so much to me; with each cry I feel more and more relieved. It feels so good to hear her cry again, to see her move around, just to see her awake in general. She keeps crying, louder now, so Zosia picks her up and rocks her in her arms.
"Shh, sweetie, don't cry, mummy's got you." She soothes, "oh, it feels so good to hold you again, you've got no idea."
The doctor comes in, and takes Penny for another scan, leaving me and Zosia to talk.
"I can't believe she's awake." Zosia says.
"Me neither." I reply, "just this morning I was talking to Mo about how worried I was about her, and now she's awake. I feel so lucky."
"She's going to be fine Ollie, I can sense it." She smiles.
"I hope so Zosh, I really do." I smile back, putting my arm around Zosia, and giving her a hug.
