Mary's POV
"Kevin?", I repeated myself, still unable to stomach the fact that he's right here. Standing right in front of me.
He kept looking at me with those two dark holes as pupils.
"How's it going, Mary?", he says succinctly, giving me his signature smirk. Oh god, that fucking smirk. It made me melt when I was 16 years old and it still has the power of making me feel the same way right now at 21 years old.
"....You're out of prison.", I whisper, completely ignoring his initial question.
He raises an eyebrow with amusement,"I realize that."
"Oh my god.", I meant to think it, but it ended up coming out as a whisper instead.
"....I have no idea what you're trying to tell me, but if I were you, I'd just go ahead and say it.", he tells me, tilting his head to the side. As if he were genuinely confused to why I was acting like this when I haven't seen him in 5 years.
"I....uh...", I'm unable to get out any more words. Because I genuinely feel as if there's nothing left to say to him right now.
He tilts his wrist to look at his watch,"You know, Mary, I have to get going in about an hour. But if you'd like, we could go get some coffee right now."
"I'm seeing someone.", I realize that I said that a little too loudly right after I clamped my mouth shut.
But this doesn't seem to faze him in any way,"I'm not asking to get in your pants, Mary. I just wanted to have a chance to ask you how you've been doing for these past few years."
"Oh.", I say, a little mortified by my initial reaction,"Yeah, I knew that.....umm sure."
"Alright. Meet me by the door in 5 minutes. I just have to finish getting a few things first.", he says.
"Yeah, me too...", I reply.
As soon as he walks away, I grab an extra packet of cookie dough.
I'll probably need it anyway....
There's not really much that I need, so after a few more minutes of browsing, I go to the cash register and check my things out.
Kevin's waiting by the door and when I walk towards him, he opens the door for me.
Well, same old chivalry.
We don't have to walk that far anyway. There's actually a 24 hour coffee shop about a block away.
It's about 11:00 at night. The reason I trust Kevin right know is because he's never sexually assaulted, nor tried to assualt, me ever.
We walk in and there's only a few people who are in there. The man working there looks tired as hell and is half asleep anyway.
I order a cup of hot chocolate and before I'm able to take out my wallet, Kevin's already given the man a few dollars for me. He orders a large cup of black coffee and we both go to sit at one of the booths at the corner.
"So....", he begins,"How has it been lately, Mary?"
I felt relieved at the fact that I wasn't forced to initiate the first sentence,"Well, what exactly is it that you would like to know?"
He shrugs his shoulders,"Anything. What you've been doing."
I take a sip of my drink and burn my toungue by accident,"Well. I majored in Psychology. Moved out. Got a place of my own. You know. The usual. I'm hoping to get a job soon. But right now, I'm only an intern. They don't pay too much though.....So....How was prison?"
