When you're trapped in a steel box, thousands of feet in the air, trembling with fear, you can't help but wonder why? Why did I let my parents talk me into going on this stupid holiday? It'll be fun, they said. The plane will be fine, they said. Oh how wrong they were.
Clouds pooled around the aeroplane like a white ocean. Although I was high in the sky, I felt as though I was drowning. My parents sat a few rows behind me and I could hear their light hearted chatter although they hadn't a care in the world.
I was sat beside a girl who looked to be about the same age as me. She had a wide grin plastered on her face and it made her look quite creepy. As if she sensed my stare on her, her neck twisted quickly and she stared back at me.
"Hi. I'm Nam Eunsang." She spoke quickly as though the words couldn't come out quicker as she extended her hand for me to shake. I hesitantly took it and shook her hand.
"Song Jihyo." I say quietly, contemplating on if should ask about the creepy smile or not. I decided against it. My mind wandered to sitting at home on my bed, binge watching Netflix with a trail of Pringles around me like the start of a sacrifice.
The aeroplane suddenly began to sway and I grabbed the armrest so tight my knuckles turned white. Eunsang sat contently staring ahead of her with the creepy grin still on her face.
The turbulence didn't last very long and I shuffled in my seat, discontent with the stiff aeroplane chair that I was sat in, continuing to wish that I was lying in my comfy bed. I briefly glance around me and realise that I appear to be the only one in discomfort on this plane, making me feel out of place.
"You know, I had this friend from my childhood." Eunsang starts talking about something but I don't really listen, I'm too busy trying to regulate my heartbeat. "He was so cute. I love him so much. I really like him. I mean, I haven't seen him in 13 years but I still love him." She stares at me with creepy eyes and I cringe. Why did my parents have to put me in economy class next to this creep?
I mean, I could be sitting in a much more comfy chair sipping on champagne and complaining about the weather. But no, I'm stuck in the world's oldest, most uncomfortable chair listening to some crazy woman talk about the love she has for a man she hasn't seen in 13 years.
Just as I think things can't get any worse, she pulls out a packet of ramen from thin air and begins violently slurping the noodles into her mouth. "Wh-where did you get that?" I ask, almost afraid of the answer. The smell of the chicken ramen wafted its way to my nose, it smelt stale and made my nose crinkle with disgust.
Eunsang appears to simply ignore my question and decides to hold up some noodles to my face, the warm juice dripping from the noodles and soaking my jeans. "You want some?" I swallow hard and desperately fight the look of disgust that wants to appear on my face.
"I'm fine thanks." I choke out, pulling my legs into my chest and facing the other way, staring out to the sea of clouds.
My eyelids begin to droop shut as I began to grow tired when I felt a soft tap on my shoulder. Part of me wanted to turn around and yell at Eunsang that I didn't want any of her damn ramen and that I just wanted to get some sleep on this treacherous flight. However, when I turned around I was met with the face of a flight attendant.
She was smiling kindly at me but I knew she was exhausted from being on the flight and was pretty much ready to jump out the emergency exit at this point. "Excuse me miss, but you've been moved up to first class. If you'd kindly follow me, I'll show you to your seat."
I blinked a few times at disbelief. I must be dreaming, right? But no, I gathered my things and followed the flight attendant down through business class and into first class. True to its name, it was very classy, spacious and luxurious. I felt my shoulders relax as I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding in and slumped down into the seat I was shown to.
