Minneapolis, Minnesota
As I felt Prince whispering in my ear, I opened my eyes to see the alarm clock read past twelve.
"I'll be back late but as soon as I can," he said to me.
I kissed him. "Okay."
"Feel better. Stay home today."
"Okay."
Prince kissed my forehead one more time before heading out. He was on his way to prepare for the annual Minnesota Black Music Awards that was to be held later that night in St. Paul, Minnesota at The Prom Center.
I could've put aside my aches and pains to accompany him but he really didn't want me to. After our late night, he just wanted me to take this Friday to rest.
After a few minutes of being left alone, I tried falling back to sleep. The blinds were shut but sunlight managed to peek through. The room was cold from the air conditioner. I was shivering under the covers.
I sat up and swung my feet around to the floor, then I trotted over to the window to cut off the A.C.
Just as the cool air stopped blowing on me, I noticed the pressure south of my waistline. The same pressure I always felt when I'd get my period.
I stood up straight and walked to the bathroom.
I was scared to pee, honestly.
And after I did, I sat there on the toilet for a while before wiping.
When I did, I saw pink lining on the tissue. That was what I was afraid of.
I flushed the toilet and stuck a panty liner to my underwear.
Though the bleeding was light, I still needed to talk to someone about it. I thought of trying to get a hold of my doctor. But I knew someone who I could get to quicker.
My mother.
...
"You took how many tests, now?"
I tried to hold my laugh as I swallowed my spoon full of Cocoa Puffs. "I know. And they all came out positive."
I was in the kitchen, sitting at the table, having breakfast. I almost put on some eggs but just turning on the stove churned my stomach.
So, cereal it was.
"But mom, I'm worried."
"Skipper's happy."
"No, not that." I drowned the head of the spoon in the milk. "I woke up feeling that rush. You know, when you're about to get your period? And I'm spotting."
