November, 1985
My aching belly kept me glued to my couch. My feet were propped up on the arm of the loveseat and my back sank deep into the plush cushions. With the remote sitting on my tummy, I continued to tap the upward arrow to find something good to watch on television.
No. No. No.
I was two seconds away from giving up and just going into the office. A bag of pretzels and 20-ounce ginger ale would probably suffice.
"Coming up after the break, what you missed last night from Prince's exclusive televised interview with Mtv."
What? Prince didn't do interviews. How did I not know about this? Again, I shouldn't have cared. But I was still very bitter about my last abrupt meeting with him. It was hard for me to even be honest with myself. But I did miss him. So, I kept it on that station. Just to know what I missed.
"Prince, for the first time, speaking out about being in love."
My heart sank down to my bubbly gut when they transitioned the segment to a clip from his interview.
He looked so handsome with his hair slicked back.
"I am in love. And for once in my life, I'm not going to hide it."
I sat up.
The clip cut again. "She's my greatest muse. My best friend. And my future."
It was back to the news correspondent. "More about Prince's new lady when we come back."
In the past year, Prince had so many women tied to him. But Prince, publicly dating someone??? I was engaged to him for months and never did he seem to show signs of wanting to go public. This kind of hurt. What woman could make him do the impossible? What woman could he love so much that he needed the world to know? What woman, if not me?
The commercial break had to be the longest ever. My stomach was hurting even more with the anticipation.
But as promised, they got right back to the interview clips upon return.
"Women around the world woke up in tears as rock star Prince officially pronounced himself off the market. And meet the girl who stole his heart."
Again, they cut to a clip of the interview. And when I saw the girl sitting next to him, wrapped in his arms, I lost it.
What the fuck?!
The remote crashed into my television set just as I was making my way to my phone. I had to call my so called 'best friend.'
