                The laughter.

                That’s what drove me insane- that’s what made me want to punch everyone in the face. Of course I didn’t. Of course I simply walked down the hallways head held high, but eventually my hard demeanor started to droop. Soon, I was no longer mad, but simply sad.

                “Oh come on Alex!” Maren screams at me, “It’s not like we’re going to stop being your friends.”

                Julie nods vigorously. Carly gives me a warm smile.

                “Yeah, but Rachel, Chelsea, Holly, and Martha will,” I say wearily.

                “So? You don’t even like half of them,” Julie chimes in this time.

                I sigh. I know I shouldn’t be this sad. I mean I still have two of my best friends, I’m still going to sit with them at lunch, people still talk to me, but it’s hard you know? It’s hard to know that people know one of your biggest secrets and now make fun of you for it. It’s hard to hear people mutter mean words to their friends about you. Teenagers are cruel.

                “I’m just annoyed, you know?” I tell them.

                We’re at lunch right now- under the big tree on campus. It’s a huge willow tree that during spring time is absolutely gorgeous, but since it’s fall, almost winter, it’s not so gorgeous- just a tree to sit under.

                “I have to go,” Carly says suddenly, “I’ll see you guys later, okay?”

                I nod my head. She gives me one last encouraging smile before trudging back inside. I let out a long breath. It’s visible in the cold winter air.

                I lean further into the tree trunk- my head tipped back so I can see the blue sky through the almost dead tree limbs.

                “Alex what are you doing under this tree trunk!?” I hear someone yell from a short distance.

                I don’t bother looking. I already know who it is. Beside me I hear both Julie and Maren groan- each for different reasons.

                “You’ll tell us exactly what happened today that’s made you this sad later,” Julie says in an unusually serious tone.
