Prologue

I remember having this crazy out of body experience. Sort of like not being able to believe that this was my life.

Sometimes things that shouldn't be normal to a kid end up becoming second nature.

That's what happened to my sister and I. Me seventeen and she only seven, we should have been living your typical cookie cutter life with the white picket fence and all that other crap that comes with it. Instead, here we are, driving and relocating for the second time this year, and it's only August.

I pulled into the drive way and stepped out of the car and into the back seat to wake up my sister.

"Hails, we're here, come on", I said in warm voice. After everything we've been through I was grateful she was still able to sleep soundly, because God knows I can't anymore.

She took my hand as we walked up the aisle to the large house. I knocked on the door and waited for an answer, periodically looking over my shoulder.  The door flew open, revealing a half naked guy standing in front of me looking groggy and annoyed.

"Can I help you?" He asked, irritation vibrant in his voice.

"I'm Sawyer, Hayden's friend." I told the stranger whose house I'd be invading for a few days. I didn't trust him, I didn't trust anyone, but for now he was my best shot at avoiding spending the night in my car.

"Right," he said as he eyed me up and down suspiciously.

"What?" I asked.

He shook his head,"Nothing, you're just not who I was expecting", he said as he rubbed his eyes.

Wouldn't be the first time I've gotten that reaction so I simply stayed quiet till he moved aside, motioning to let me in.

I was exhausted from driving and all I wanted was to go to sleep before he could start asking questions. I didn't want to go into detail about why an underage teenager and her kid sister were migrating from San Francisco to Oregon at three in the morning. I knew the interrogation was inevitable but I was hoping to put it off till tomorrow.

He flicked on the lights, motioning with his head to where I'd be sleeping for the night.

After eyeing the room I turned to him gazing at him far longer than I should have, noticing his impressive stature and the intoxicating emerald green color his eyes held.

Noticing my far too long stare he said, "What? Like what you see or something?" He asked, more to embarrass me than to sound cocky.

I shook my head, keeping my expression neutral but knowing very well my blush was giving me away,"I've seen better." I shot back, hiding a tired smirk.

He scoffed, surprised by my response, or maybe that I had given him one at all, "Right." He said, not believing me for a second.

He extended his hand to me, "I'm Tyler by the way, Tyler Evans".

I reached for it rather heasitantly, "Sawyer Brooks and that's my sister Hailey. Thanks for letting us stay here for a while." I said trying to sound appreciative.

"So Hayden didn't tell me much, just that you were sort of looking for a change and needed time to get settled. It's none of my business but I just don't want to be involved in anything. The less I know the better, I guess" He said, mouth in a thin line, not knowing much else to say.

I stood by the door way looking at the ground as I mumbled, "Thanks."

"Yeah. Goodnight." He said as he walked out.

I reverted back to the room and stripped off the insanity that clung to my clothing. It had been a long day and I just needed to sleep and figure out what my next step was.

AUTHORS NOTE:

Hi everyone, my name is Ashley, I'm seventeen and I live in California. Im a total ammature when it comes to writing but I thought I'd give the whole book writing thing a go, so here it is! I know it's short but, like I said, this is my first time legitimately writing a story so hang in there, I promise they will get longer as the story develops. Besides it's just a prologue, sort of to test the waters and see if anyone is intrested in reading it.

It's not editited so if you find any spelling/grammar mistakes please ignore them, I'll try to go back later and fix them.

Other than that I really hope you enjoy this story and stick around to see what happens next :)
