Chapter Twenty Nine
"Can I come in?" I asked nervously, shuffling my feet, his sweater in my hands.
He looked down at the ground, debating whether or not to let me in. It was then that I first contemplated the possibility of being kicked to the curve without a word.
"I-I brought you your sweater back." I said, hoping to persuade him into letting me inside.
The silence became deafening but he eventually let out a sigh, allowing me to walk through the door.
The place was exactly how I remembered it back when he first brought me here. The mural of the ocean still visible and vibrant. A smile dared to peak out as I thought of the nostalgia of that day.
I walked further into the room where he sat on the love seat. For a split second I thought about standing and saying everything I needed to say but my courage was slowly fading. As I took a seat next to him, I could feel the nerves in my stomach and that trembling fear coarse my entire body.
For the first time since I saw him, he finally spoke. "What are you doing here Sawyer?" He asked with a strange new wave of confidence I had never seen on him before.
Not exhibiting that same assertive aura, I replied, "I-Well...Honestly I just wanted to talk. About everything."
"Everything needed to be said was already done with that night. So I'm sorry to say your visit was a waste of time." He said, standing up as he headed for the door to usher me out.
A slight panic rose from my chest as I thought about leaving without explaining myself to him first. I had left every emotion that involved him off to the side ever since my mom's reappearance into our lives, but they couldn't be shoved into a corner forever. I knew that reality very well and on a certain level I think he did too.
"Aiden." I called out to him, "Please. Just give me a chance to explain and if after what I have to say you want to kick me out of here and never see me again then that's fine. But please just hear me out." I pleaded with him.
Even without a word escaping his lips, I noticed his internal struggle fighting to make a decision. I knew in some way he needed this closure as much as I did, I just wasn't sure if he was ready to hear it.
"Please." I said once more.
As if in defeat, he walked back and sat beside me, careful not to make any contact. I peeked up at him through my lashes, wondering how I should start and drawing out blank.
"So what? You're here to tell me you and mister 'wonderful' are happy and together now?" He shocked me by saying.
"Is that what you really think I came here to talk about? And for your information, no we're not together." I said, annoyance laced in my voice.
He let out a grumbled snort, "Well that's surprising."
"Tyler isn't the reason we broke up."
At that Aiden stood up with a look of disgust and anger radiating his body. Almost as if I had accidently cut the blue cord instead of the red one on a ticking time bomb, and this one was about to go off.
"Oh it's not?!" His voice echoed throughout the loft.
In the few months I dated Aiden, never had I seen him get this angry or even raise his voice for that matter. He was always so calm and passive, unlike the man that stood before me.
"So the fact that you're in love with him had absolutely nothing to do with you not being able to love me and say it?" His sanity seemed to be wearing thinner as each word came out.
