Chapter Four
Coming home from work had been interesting to say the least. As I stepped through the door I saw Tyler and Hailey both standing up, in front of the T.V with controls in their hands, shoving each other playfully. It was adorable to see but it wasn't what I was expecting, considering when I left, my sister was supposedly sick.
I coughed in an attempt to get their attention. Fortunately for me they both ignored me and continued shooting at each other in whatever game they were playing, their eyes blood shot from staring at the screen. How long have they been playing? I thought.
"Hailey? Tyler? Can you guys get out of your little world for a second please?" I was getting rather impatient at this point.
Finally, Tyler turned to me, "Oh hey I didn't see you there."
"Hailey, I thought you said you didn't feel good." I said arching an eyebrow.
Just as the words left my mouth, both Hailey and Tyler looked at each other wide eyed.
"Alright what's going on." I demanded.
"Hailey why don't you go to my room and choose another game to play so I can talk to your sister." Tyler said.
Hailey looked between us and pulled Tyler down to her level to whisper something in his ear.
When the hell did these two get so close? I thought.
Tyler nodded to whatever she told him while I stared in utter disbelief.
"So are you going to tell me why she's magically feeling better all of a sudden? Because last I checked I had to leave work to bring her here, go back and worry for the rest of my shift only to come home and see that she's more than okay." I was starting to get angry.
"You're mad because she's okay?" He asked mockingly.
"I'm mad because she lied and I don't understand why," His sarcasm was only adding flames to the fire that was already rising within me.
"Okay okay, look sit down and I'll explain everything."
As he told me what had ahappened at school I felt rather hurt that she felt like she couldn't tell me. Or maybe she wanted to but I wasn't there to go get her, which made me feel even worse. Instead she confided in a guy we've known for what, two and a half months or so?
She was a smart girl, so when Tyler told her to go to his room to look for another game she knew very well that he meant to go to her room. As I walked into the bedroom I saw her sitting in the middle of her bed with her legs brought up to her chest. She lifted her head when she heard the door open and close when I stepped in.
"What's going on munchkin?" I asked
"Did Tyler tell you?"
"Nothing that's why I'm asking you." I lied.
"Yes he did. If not you would still be mad at me." I underestimate how smart she is sometimes.
"Okay he told me. But why didn't you tell me when you came to the restaurant?"
"Because when you saw me you thought it had something to do with Alexander and, I don't know, I just got scared." She confessed.
"I'm sorry Hailey but can you blame me? When something is wrong, my mind goes straight to him. But that's still no excuse for me to have gotten all crazy on you, I know. And what Tyler told you about punching that stupid little kid? Take it. No boy should ever touch a girl in that way" I said giving her playful shove.
Since we're pretty much our only family we never stay mad at each other for too long. I'm worried that that won't be the case when she gets older. I shudder at the thought of having to deal with her when she first gets her period or starts liking a boy, especially if she's anything like me.
