Later that night Mac and Beth were sitting on the couch, eating a pizza Mac had ordered. Beth was snuggled into his side, watching the news report a robbery a few towns over. Beth had been missing for roughly a month and a half, and she was still the topic of the little stories that scrolled on the bottom of the screen, but no new evidence had surfaced. Beth felt guilty about being "missing" and worrying her family, but what could she do? Go up to Shawn and say, "Hey, so I got kidnapped a month ago and now I'm some guys sex slave. But don't worry I really like being here with him so I'm gonna stay."? It was a stupid idea. Knowing Shawn he'd hunt Mac down and murder him and then take Beth home. She was stuck here until either they died, Mac went to prison, or they had to go on the run. She knew the likelihood of going back home to Georgia was slim, but she was happy here. She was happy with Mac. She may have been brainwashed or be experiencing Stockholm Syndrome, but she didn't care. She loved him, and wanted to be with him forever.
Mac was similar in the "wanting her to stay forever" part. He was almost completely sure that he liked her a lot. But the main topic of his focus wasn't on the potential relationship he could have with Beth. He was focused on how to kill the meth head who cheated him out of $400. He could always call Luke and have him arrange a meeting on top of a mesa, but that'd seem suspicious. How could he lure him to the top of a mesa to kill him? He couldn't call him himself; it'd look bad. Mac sighed, staring ahead blankly. His mind was blank with ideas. His call with Luke was the best bet he had but at the same time he knew it was likely to fail.
"Mac? You ok?" Beth asked, nudging his arm.
"Mhm." He muttered, still staring blankly. He needed an idea because he needed money! If he didn't get the money then he couldn't pay rent. Then Beth would be found.
Beth...
Could Beth help?
He didn't want her to help him. This could be dangerous. There could be gunfire. The last thing Mac wanted was for Beth to get shot because of him. He could live with a lot, but he wasn't sure if he could live with the guilt of Beth getting killed because of him. Well, he could live, but he wouldn't be happy. But she could help a little. Maybe she could seduce the douche and convince him to go to the top of the mesa. But just imagining her groping at the prick set his blood boiling. The only one who was allowed to touch his woman was MAC! No one else! He claimed her fair and square...well maybe not fair. But still. She was his, and no one else's. Though he sort of liked the idea of Beth luring the douche to the edge of a mesa, but he didn't want Beth doing it. He...he...cared about her. More than he should've. After all, he'd asked a whore what to do on her period.
Wait, a whore...
Andrea.
She could be the bait. He wouldn't care if Andrea got killed. The guy would get killed, he'd get the money, and Beth and him could have victory sex. He nodded and smiled a little, the plan forming in his head.
"Why're you so happy all of a sudden?" The angel sitting beside him asked.
"Thinkin'." He mumbled, still smiling. He was going to win this fight.
"Oh yeah? About what?" She asked seductively, reaching over and resting her hand on his thigh and rubbing it. "Does it have anything to do with me?"
"Just thinkin' about how I'm gonna kill the fucker who cheated me outta our money." He stated.
Beth's seductive smile faded instantly. "Wait, you're gonna kill him?" She asked, shocked that Mac would actually be willing to kill someone. He was taking a life! That was irreplaceable! It was one thing to beat him up, but to actually murder someone? Her dinner that she'd just eaten felt like it was coming back up just thinking about it. Was Mac really capable of killing someone?
"Well yeah. I can't just let him get away with robbin' me, or else every other druggie in these canyons will think they can get away with it too." He pointed out.
"Don't you think that's extreme?" She pleaded. Mac was already a meth cook, a kidnapper, a rapist; he couldn't be a killer too.
"Beth, do ya understand that if I let him go unharmed, he'll tell his other druggie friends, and then one day I could get jumped, robbed, and killed?" He demanded, looking down at her.
Beth didn't know what to say. If Mac didn't kill this guy, then the guy could turn around and kill Mac. But if he did go through with the murder, then he'd be a killer. But which was worse? Mac dying or Mac killing?
Mac didn't like Beth's lack of response. Was she ok with him being killed? He grit his teeth. Of course she'd be ok with him getting murdered. She didn't care.
Mac scoffed. "'Course ya don't care. Ya couldn't give a shit if I were murdered." He muttered, standing up from the couch. It hurt him though, to think that Beth didn't care if he got killed. He would've cared if she had gotten murdered.
Beth was shocked to hear that, though. "What? Mac of course I'd care if you got killed!" She stated, standing up right after him.
"Sure. Keep tellin' herself that." He growled, tossing his plate into the garbage can.
"I'm serious!"
"Whatever! I don't care if ya don't care!" Mac snapped, keeping his back to her.
"I do care, Mac!" She yelled, clenching her fists. He was making her so mad! So mad that angry tears were brewing in her eyes.
"Oh yeah? Why? Why the ever livin' hell would ya care about me?" He demanded. The house was shaking from all the yelling.
"Because I love you!"
Silence. It was perfect silence inside and outside the house. It was as if the entire world had frozen for this moment. Mac kept his back to her, while angry tears were rolling down Beth's cheeks. There it was. Her emotions were out in the open. Her feelings were at Mac's mercy. He'd either cradle them gently, or drop them on the cold hard ground.
"What did you say?" He demanded quietly.
"I love you." She whispered, more tears rolling down her cheeks and landing on the ground.
Mac stayed quiet. He didn't know what to say. She just confessed to him. How the hell does someone respond to that? Say 'I love you' back? Not likely. Mac wasn't an emotion guy. He would say he loved someone. He'd never had to say it before, so why start now? Yes he felt some affection toward her, but was it really love? He doubted it very much.
Instead of confronting this, Mac turned and heads towards the door. "Be back later." He muttered, slamming the door behind him and leaving Beth alone in the cold, empty house.
