Mac left her room without a fight, but with a deep feeling of dread sitting in the pit of his stomach. He headed to the receptionist, who was busy playing solitaire on her computer.
"Can I use yer phone?" Mac asked, a rock sitting in his stomach.
The receptionist just gestured to the phone, and Mac grabbed it. He held it to his ear as he glanced at the TV. The news was playing, and Beth's story was almost dead. But there was still a reminder.
801-382-9173
He swallowed and slowly dialed the number, and when he got to the last digit, he heard the other end ringing, and he knew that this was it.
Finally, after the fourth ring, a tired sounding man answered. "Hello?"
"Hey, this is Shawn Greene, right?" Mac asked, dread and sorrow churning in his gut.
"Yeah. Who's this?" He demanded.
"Mac. But that ain't important. I called because...because..." was he really going to do this? Was he going to give Beth up?
He had to. She didn't know anyone in this town, and if she had a shot at a good life, it'd be with her family.
"I found yer lil sister." Mac managed finally, sighing slightly. Now she was gone officially. He'd never see her again, and you know what? He deserved that. She deserved it.
Shawn was quiet for a moment. "Beth Greene?" He asked.
"Yeah," Mac mumbled.
Shawn let out a happy sounding noise, and Mac flinched a little. He'd miss Beth, that was certain. This is for her. This is for her, not you. This is for her.
"Thank you so much! Where are you guys?" Shawn asked.
"The Saint Paul hospital. She's in room 218, second floor." Mac said, glancing down the hall towards her room.
"Ok, where can I meet you?" Shawn asked.
"Why would ya need to meet me?" Mac asked.
"For the reward money. 75 grand. Haven't you seen the ad?" Shawn stated, and Mac was genuinely surprised. He hadn't thought about the prize money.
"I, uh, I dunno. You can keep it." Mac mumbled. He didn't need the money. He'd put her in the hospital.
"No, I insist. You found her, it's your money. Now where can I meet you at?" Shawn insisted, and Mac swallowed. He didn't want to meet Beth's brother.
"Here, how 'bout ya use it for Beth's hospital bill. Use it for me." Mac quickly said, and before Shawn could object, Mac hung up. Then, with a heavy sigh, he headed towards the exit without looking back.
Beth opened her eyes when Mac had left her room and she sighed, her heart aching slightly. She just needed some time away from him. Ok, maybe a lot of time. Mac had hurt her feelings badly, yes, but he still cared about her. Otherwise he could've let her die in the tub. But she was bothered by what he had said. That he hadn't cheated on her. What was it? Did he or did he not cheat? Was he just trying to hurt her even more by saying that he did? Why the hell would he do that? She thought he was a man, not a child. She sighed and shifted, grabbing the cup from her nightstand and taking a sip of the stale water. She wrinkled her nose, just as there was a knock on the door.
"You know you can come in, right?" She called, rolling her eyes a little. She knew that for the next few days Mac would probably be acting like he was walking on thin ice, and he technically was. But at least they were both fine, and at least Mac showed regret for what he had done.
The door opened, but Mac didn't come in. Instead, it was Shawn, who she hadn't seen in who knows how long. Her eyes widened and she gasped, tears in her eyes as Shawn quickly walked forward. He threw his arms around her and hugged her tightly, looking ready to break apart as they held each other.
When he finally pulled away from her, he was smiling. He gave her forehead a kiss and Beth felt like sobbing. "Sh-Shawn?" She whispered.
"The one and only." He chuckled, squeezing her hand tightly. Shawn looked so much older than when she'd last seen him. He had dark, heavy bags under his eyes and looked about 20 years older.
"H-how long was I gone?" She whispered.
"About two and a half months." Shawn said, sighing softly as he gazed at Beth. "I am so sorry. I shouldn't have left you alone in that stupid bar. I should've known better." He apologized, and Beth saw tears welling up in his eyes. Her heart clenched seeing her big brother almost cry. She leaned up and hugged him again, squeezing her eyes shut as she was back in his warm embrace. But something was nagging at her.
Where was Mac?
Yes she was mad at him, and for good reason, but she still hoped that he was safe. She also briefly wondered how Shawn had found her.
"How'd you find me?" She asked, pulling away from Shawn's hug and gazing up at him.
"Some guy called and said that you were here." Shawn said with a shrug. "He said his name was Max or Mac or something."
Beth's heart clenched again. Mac had given her up so that she could be with her family? She felt tears welling in her eyes again. She needed to see him. "Where is he?"
"I dunno. He wasn't here when I got here, I think he left already." Shawn shrugged.
Mac gave her up so that she could be happy.
