The drive to Utah took hours and hours, and they still weren't very close to Vegas. They were still a few hundred miles away, and needed to stop. Shawn and Martha were arguing up front on where to stay the night. Beth was content with sitting behind Martha, writing in her song journal and humming some toons to match the song. Denise was fast asleep beside her, a pacifier in her mouth while a teddy bear snuggled into her side. Beth glanced up, her stomach rumbling.
"Look, there's a motel right there. Let's just stay here for the night." Shawn stated, already pulling into the parking lot. Beth could tell that it was a bar, too. And bars sold food, right?
"Do you see how filthy it is? And I see at least twenty redneck trucks in the parking lot alone! I don't want to be raped by some methed out redneck hick tonight!" Martha exclaimed. Shawn growled.
"You know that shit only happens in movies, right?" He spat, pulling into a spot. "Plus, I'm hungry. Beth, you hungry?" He asked.
"Yeah-"
"Whatever. I'm not staying here." Martha growled.
Shawn growled again, too. "Fine. We'll keep looking for a hotel. Beth, you get us a table." Shawn ordered.
Beth hopped out of the blue truck and it sped away. She loved Martha as a sister-in-law and all, but she hated Shawn and her bickering all the time. She sighed and headed inside, immediately hit with the stench of cigarettes and whiskey. She waited for a few moments for someone, until she realized it was a "seat yourself" establishment. She walked to an empty booth, sitting down facing the door. All around her rednecks and hookers talked. Most of the women here looked fake with breast implants and bright red lipstick. The rednecks looked disgusting, too, but the hookers didn't seem to mind. She sat silently and picked up a menu, browsing through the burger options.
"Hey, girly." A rough voice said. Beth glanced up at the stranger. He had short dusty brown hair, a goatee, and piercing blue eyes. He was wearing a dark blue jumpsuit and red mud was caked onto his boots. "This seat taken?" He asked.
"Um, yes. My family is going to sit there." Beth said, offering him a friendly smile.
"Oh, well where are they?" He asked, glancing around.
"They're looking for a hotel. They'll be back soon." Beth said, silently hoping the redneck would leave.
"Huh." He grunted, and sat across from her anyway. She didn't say anything. She didn't want to be rude and make him leave, but if it came down to it... "So what's your name, doll?" He asked, taking out a toothpick and sticking it in his mouth.
"It's Beth." She said, smiling a little. She just couldn't be mean and tell him to go away. She didn't know why, but she didn't have a mean bone in her body.
"Huh. That's a nice name. You ain't from here, are ya?" He stated, leaning back and resting his hands behind his head.
"No, I'm not. I'm from Georgia." She said.
"Yer a little southern belle, ain't chya?"
Beth shrugged. "I dunno. I guess." She said, flipping through her menu.
"So why're you all the way over west, hon?" He asked, leaning forward a bit and chewing on the thin piece of wood.
"Well, my sister-in-law has a friend in Vegas who can get me a record deal." She said, smiling at the idea of her own album. Ooh, what would the cover look like?
"Record deal, huh? You a singer?" The man's eyes narrowed.
"Yeah." Was all she said. "I never caught your name."
