"I never kissed anyone like that before. I liked it."
Beth was speechless. Mac's gazed flickered between her eyes and the wall. Was this way of confessing his love to her? Did he love her? She didn't know how to respond to that, so she said the first thing that came to her.
"I liked it too." She whispered.
Mac glanced at her and nodded once before focusing his gaze on his lap. Beth didn't say anything else as she finished cleaning up his wound. What else could she say? She didn't want to jeopardize their relationship by saying anything. She kept glancing at his face, which was always turned away from her and staring at a wall or the floor as if it had a very entertaining channel playing on it.
Mac didn't know what to say either. He wanted to tell her that he loved her, but there was so much to lose. Or was there? Beth's search was slowly dying down, and sooner or later it would all cease up and they'd be free. He wanted her, he really did, but what if her affections were only because he was the only guy around? It wasn't like there were many other men who came here. And what about her old boyfriend, Jimmy? If she had to make a choice between the two of them, he knew that she'd pick Jimmy. Why would she pick him? He kidnapped her, tortured her, hurt her... she had no reason to like him or even want to be around him.
When Beth finished cleaning the wound she bandaged it, glancing at Mac every now and then. His gaze was focused on the wall still, and he was chewing his lip like he was thinking. Beth pouted a little and leaned forward, kissing him on the cheek. "What's wrong?" She asked.
Mac shook his head and glanced down at his shoulder. The white bandages shone brightly in the light of the bathroom. His blood had been cleaned up and though his shoulder still throbbed, it didn't burn anymore. Beth had worked wonders on the wound. He couldn't tell Beth what he was thinking. If she knew that she had the option to leave, she would take it. But Mac was too stubborn to let her go. He...he loved her.
"Nothin'." He mumbled, looking away.
"It ain't nothing. Tell me, I don't judge."
Mac stood up and shook his head again, this time leaving the room. Beth sat in silence, staring at the spot where he left. She sighed and started to pack up the medical supplies. What was he thinking about? Was he feeling guilty about killing a person? She could understand that guilt. She'd once killed something. It wasn't a person, but her neighbor's dog. She'd accidentally run the poor thing over with her father's truck one night, and the owner, a little boy, had sobbed for days afterward. It was the worst feeling she'd ever felt. Maggie and Sean had helped her deal with the guilt, and she eventually got over it. But Mac killed a person. That'd take a longer time to get over. And he'd need a lot of comforting.
Beth stood up and headed into the bedroom, where she found Mac in just his boxers laying on the bed. She paused in the doorway. Mac glanced up at her before returning his gaze to the ceiling. She walked over to her side of the bed, sitting down and curling up into his side. Mac didn't say anything, just let Beth rest her head on his good shoulder.
"I'm not mad. That you killed someone." She whispered.
"Mhm."
"I don't blame you. You were right; it was a kill or be killed situation." Beth murmured. "If you need to talk, you can talk to me."
Mac glanced at Beth, feeling a small twinge in his heart. She really did care about him. He rolled onto his side, resting a hand on her hip. She glanced at him, staring into his eyes. Mac leaned forward and pressed his lips gently against hers. Beth closed her eyes and rested a hand against his cheek. His lips moved softly with hers, caressing her soft body against his own. Beth ran her fingers through his short hair, while Mac's pulled hers back. He rolled so that he was resting on top of her, his arms like a cage around her small frame. Beth let out a soft moan, arching her back so that her stomach hit his. She wanted Mac. Not just his cock, but him as a person. She wanted to be the kind of wife to greet him after a long day at work, and to cook his favorite meals and cuddle with him at night. She wanted to start over somewhere else and put this place behind them. To start a family with him.
And Mac couldn't help but want most of those things, too. He wanted to treat her like his queen and to please her in every possible way. To hold her when she cried, to make her laugh when she was down, to make her happy. He wanted to leave this place and all the bad memories behind them, but they never would. Beth would never forget all the pain of the first couple weeks or the harsh words spat at her. She'd never be truly able to forgive him. Never truly trust him. Not after all of that. There was no reason to love him, or ever want to have children with him, or introduce him to her parents. He prayed to God that he'd never have to meet her father or her brother or her boyfriend.
Yet Beth was willing to put all of that behind them. She knew that Mac wasn't a truly evil man. He wasn't an irredeemable monster. And she put all of her emotions into the simple, heavenly kiss they shared.
