Survived

Mac fell asleep in the cold metal chair. The stress of if Beth would survive was eating him alive. He was hoping that she would somehow survive this, but she'd lost a lot of blood that day...

Suddenly a gently hand shook his shoulder, making his eyes snap open and his head while up. A nurse in blue scrubs was standing there, smiling softly.

"She'll be ok. Just a little blood loss, but that's it." She murmured. "She's still asleep, but you can wait in her room if you'd like."

"Thanks," Mac mumbled, fleeing light with relief as he headed into Beth's room. But he paused when he did. Beth had been cleaned up and her left arm was now in a cast. Her hair was no longer bloody, but was now a shiny blonde. Mac's heart ached, listening to the heart monitor beep quietly. She shouldn't be here. She should've been at home sleeping in their bed. But she wouldn't have been here if Mac hadn't hurt her so badly. He stared at her arm, terrified to see the scars that he'd cause. He knew he could never forgive himself. She wasn't going to die, but she went through so much pain today. He didn't deserve to have her.

But he didn't want to give her up either.

He sat down on a chair beside Beth's bed, resting his head on the mattress and closing his eyes.

Beth woke up to the sharp scented sting of rubbing alcohol. She groaned softly and opened her bleary eyes, seeing nothing but hazy white? Was she in heaven? If so, then why did heaven smell like rubbing alcohol?

She opened her eyes more, focusing on a white ceiling. She then felt the warmth of a blanket wrapped around her midsection, and a cast around her arm. The same arm that she had cut. Then some weight shifted to her right, near her chest. It felt like a bowling ball was next to her, bit it wasn't.

"Beth?" Mac's raspy whisper asked softly. Beth didn't know how she felt. She loved Mac, but he'd hurt her. He'd said horrible things to her, like accusing her of aborting his baby, and then accusing her of cheating. Then he had confessed that he had cheated on her.

Before she chose what reaction she'd have, Mac's hand grasped her uninjured one. He started placing kisses on her knuckles and her palm, and Beth swore she felt water dropping onto her hand. She didn't move, didn't really react.

"Oh god, baby," Mac murmured, burying his face into her hand. "I'm so sorry. I'm so fuckin' sorry." Beth heard a hint of a sob in his voice. "I'm so fuckin' sorry. Ya shouldn't be here. Ya shouldn't be here."

"Mac..." she whispered, finally looking down at him. He had been crying. His face was flushed red and tears were streaming down his cheeks. His blue eyes were filled with more tears, which shocked Beth.

"I'm here, Beth. I'm right here." He murmured, scooting closer to her head and leaning over, giving her temple a kiss.

"Mac..." she couldn't find the words she wanted. Mac had hurt her so badly, he drove her to suicide for crying out loud! She loved him, but he'd gone too far. "Go."

Mac paused, his lips still on her temple. Then he pulled away quietly, staring down at Beth in fear and pain. "What?" He whispered, clutching her hand tightly.

"Go, Mac. Go away." She mumbled out, feeling some rage stirring in the pit of her stomach.

"Baby, what're you-"

"I said go!" She tried yelling, but her theist was too hoarse. "Go fuck that other girl. She knows what she's doing."

Mac's heart fell and shattered. "Beth I didn't touch her," Mac whispered. "I'm tellin' the truth."

Beth didn't say anything at first. She wanted to believe him, she really did, but why should she? He hurt her. "Go."

Mac pulled away from her, a couple tears dripping out of his eyes. "Beth..." he couldn't lose her. Not after he just got her back. "Beth I love you."

"You have a funny way of showing it." She whispered, closing her eyes again.

Mac didn't know what to do. He wanted to stay here with Beth to make sure that she was alright, but she clearly didn't want him here. She wanted him away from her, which hurt. But then again, why should he get to keep her? Why should he have the honor of being able to hold and love her? He had driven her to this. What had happened to her was his fault. And all because she lost the baby. He'd been irrational. He didn't deserve her love.

But her family did. He knew what he had to do.
