I paced down the hallway, eyes darting into every open room. There's no way I can go on like this without telling someone. It's eating me alive being forced to treat Mitch like this. I have to find Esther; I have to tell Esther.

I swing around the corner to see the Kaplan's talking at the end of the hall.

"Esther!" I called. She turns to me with a smile, then her smile drops as I approach her.

"Hey, can I talk to you?" I asked.

"What is up with you, Scott? Don't think I haven't noticed how rude you've been to Mitch," she questioned me, "you hurt his feelings and I know you'd never do that without an explanatio-"

"I know!" I exclaimed. She paused, appalled. I immediately felt sorry for interrupting her, but she was blaming me before even knowing the whole story.

I sighed. "I know, and I'm sorry, okay? I just need to talk to you about why I've been acting the way I am."

Esther turned to Avi. "I'll bring your barbecue when I come back. See you later."

She led me down the hall to an empty room. Pushing me down on the couch, she crossed her arms.

"Okay, Scott. Spill." She commanded. I winced at her tone.

"I-" My brain was full of unfinished sentences, and my mouth had seemed to loose its purpose. Esther's expression softened as my face turned bright red from embarrassment.

"Hey, I'm sorry for fussing at you. I know you wouldn't be this closed off without reason. What's going on?" She sat beside me and rubbed my arm comfortingly.

"It's just-" I started.

Might as well just come out with it.

"Mitch- Mitch kissed me. You guys when clubbing on Tuesday night, and when he came home..." I confessed, taking a deep breath.

I watched carefully as Esther's expression changed; from blank, to confused, realisation, then finally, sympathy. I held my hand up for her to stop.

"I don't really want to hear it. I just, I had to get it off my chest. He was drunk off his ass, doesn't remember a thing. It's unfair of me to keep all my emotions bottled up and take it out on Mitch." I sighed, getting up.

"Scott, wait. Why would Mitch kiss you in the first place? Maybe..." Esther trailed off, really not having to say what she needed to say. It was enough to make me break.

"Maybe what? What? It certainly isn't what you're thinking. Have you met Mitch? Every one of his male friends have hit on him; even the straight ones! He's into hookups, experiments, not relationships. At least not right now, or anytime soon. And to think that I-" I had to cut myself off, angrily running my fingers through my hair.

"You know what really did it, Esther?" I bit my lip, trying desperately to contain my emotion.

"After he kissed me, he looked me right in the eyes and said, 'You're my best-" I choked out a sob.

"You're my best friend."
