Prompt: The Hoying's just moved to Arlington and found a new church. A surprise awaiting them in a young boy who sings for worship. Inspiration by Todrick Hall 💛
WARNING: simple writing on purpose. This is the POV of an 8 year-old. I'm not lazy; I'm just improving the perspective.
Also mentions of the Christian religion, but it shouldn't be triggering; it's Mitch Grassi lol
Setting: 8 year-old Scott and Mitch; Same Personalities (or would be at that age)
                              Words: 1268

I fidgeted with the tie around my neck.
                              It was very itchy.
Mommy took my hand and led me to the third isle from the front of the church.
"Mommy, I don't really want to be in big people church. I wanna go to my Sunday school." I tugged at her hand. She shushed me.
"I know honey, but when we moved, we became too far away from your Sunday school. Now, hush up. Praise is starting." She whispered, before the choir walked on stage. They started off with a really boring song that said the same words over and over again.
I realllllly didn't like this church.
I crossed my arms, uncrossed my arms, tried to keep tempo with my foot, untied my shoe, then tied my shoe- only two songs had gone by.
"Welcome to Faithful Ministry Church! I hope that all of you are enjoying your Sunday so far! Let's give glory to God!" The pastor shouted, receiving a choir of 'yes Lord's ' and 'hallelujahs'.
I wish someone would turn the sound down. It's hurting my ears.
"Wonderful, wonderful." He chuckled. "Well, we're not done with praise quite yet. I've got a special treat for all of you. I'm sure you all know our one and only, Mitchell Grassi," he paused for the cheers from the people, "I know, I know. He's amazing. And, he will be the soloist of our next song. So I'd like a warm welcome for the talented, 8 year old, Mitch Grassi!"
The people behind me cheered as a small-framed boy stepped up onto the stage. He seemed shy; his brown hair was sweeping over his forehead, and I thought it looked cool. His Sunday best was a navy blue suit with matching pants. He looked nervous as he looked over the crowd. When he reached my section, his eyes briefly met mine and I gave him a big smile.
                              Yay, he smiled back!
The cheers died down, and the band began playing a song called "Oceans". I remembered it from my old church. Mitch was fidgeting with his sleeve as the strings joined in. He lifted the mic to his lips and began to sing.
"You call me out upon the waters
The great unknown
Where feet may fail
And there I find you in the mystery
In oceans deep
My faith will stand
And I will call upon your name
And keep my eyes above the waves
When oceans rise, my soul will rest in your embrace
For I am yours
And you are mine"
I was so amazed at how good he could sing! I've never heard someone sound so good. His voice is a lot higher than mine, but it made it unique. All the nerves seemed to leave Mitch as the church erupted with cheers. Mitch smiled a grateful smile, and began to get more into the song; a lot more than before.
"Your grace abounds in deepest waters
Your sovereign hand
Will be my guide
Where feet may fail and fear surrounds me
You've never failed
And you won't start now"
