Enjoy!Ruby's POV
Math and tech was the same as the others. Weird stares at me, me staring at the ceiling.
And by the time lunch came, I was starving.
I waited on line, pushing my lunch tray along with me. A few people back, I could hear someone not-so-silently cursing the mashed potatoes for being too "potatoey". I tried to catch their face but was pushed ahead in the line instead.
With the food tray in my hands, I find an empty table near the corner, and eat my food while keeping my head down.
"Ok now", someone scoffs. "Who are you", she demands and I realize it's the complaining potato person.
I lift my head up and retort "who are you?"
She sits down across from me and says, "I'm the person who sits at this table boo, your turn".
She has light blue hair cut at chin level, and has a tall form. She looks lovely despite the scowl formed on her face.
I'm about to respond, when a lanky boy with raggedy brown hair and big eyes takes a seat at the table.
"Who's this", he asks, his eyes sparkling with curiosity.
"I don't know Judith" the blue haired girl says. She then turns toward me. "This would be the perfect time for you to, you know, say your name" she says punctuating the last three words clearly.
"Ruby" is all I say.
"Well nice to meet you, Ruby" says the boy, Judith is it?
"Are you new? If so, where are you from? How was it there? How is it here? Do you like this high school 'cause I think it's alright but some people hate it, I don't understand so maybe you can explain as a possibly impartial person so-" he seemed to say this all in one breath, and was about to start up again, but was cut off
"Stop rambling nimrod, unclench" says the girl. "But seriously, what's your story?"
I hesitated. What was there to tell? I had so much to say, but is it the right choice to talk about it to these strangers?
"Not much to say. I moved from Salem to live with my Gram- uh grandmother... Uh.. And I'm a junior ". That was just about the most compressed version of my life without telling any lies.
"Well congrats on getting an upgrade, welcome to Virginia High", she says with obvious sarcasm. "Well I'm Vida, and the chatter over there is Jude".
I nod along and give a half smile to Jude, who looks like he's restraining himself from saying something. The thought brings me back to when I used to hang out with Sam. She was always kinda quiet in school but could talk for hours on end to me about... Anything. I'm not sure if the thought's supposed to make me happy, or if I'm getting homesick really fast.
"Anyways, let me see your schedule. I'm a junior too but Jude's a freshman" Vida says.
I hand it to her and she tells me that we have my next class, science, together. I guess it's kind of a relief to at least know someone, but I'm not sure I can quite call Vida a "friend". I know first impressions aren't always accurate, but so far she seems kinda...rude? Is that the right word?
Vida seemed to be staring at something far off, past my left shoulder when she said "looks like the side of your face is very interesting to pencil head over their."
"What?!" I say as I turn my head. And then I'm caught up in his blue eyes. Again!
It's English class guy, sitting in the middle of his very busy lunch table. Everyone is Talking and throwing around aluminum foil like its a football. It seems like someone's trying to talk to him too, but his eyes are still on me. It would have been creepy, if he wasn't so good looking and didn't have a small, shy smile on his lips. Next to him is gym class guy (aren't these nicknames the best?!) reading his book again, oblivious to the world.
I abruptly cut off the connection, again, and try to respond to Vida without looking fazed.
"Pencil head? Really?" I say with a small laugh.
Vida laughs back. "Well you can't say I'm wrong, I mean LOOK at him, he's like a Ticonderoga."
It feels good to laugh back though I don't agree. "Really now? Do you give everyone such "accurate" nicknames? 'Cause Judith is just pure genius" I say over dramatically for Jude's sake.
"Of course I do, Grannie over their", she says pointing at gym class guy, " is one of my best works. I swear he really is an old man stuck in an ugly teen body."
I smile a bit, "Grannie's" not the perkiest person I know either.
