You woke up early, sighing frustratingly at the ceiling above you. If only you could remain in your sweet land of dreams for a moment longer. For a bit you couldn't remember exactly what you had been dreaming about, only the warm and cozy feeling it left in your veins. It took you a few seconds of smiling to yourself before you realized that what you had been dreaming about was a certain Prince.
In the dream you had been sitting in a beautiful garden surrounded by bright colored flowers, wrapped in Mark's arms. You were admiring the orange and magenta sunset, lulled to sleep by Mark humming a tune you didn't recognize. Slowly you turned your head to face him, and his skin seemed to glow in the light of the evening. His gorgeous eyes pulled you in further and further until your lips were brushing his and-
You bolted up in your bed, blushing madly as you hurried to get dressed, shaking off the feeling of Mark's heat sinking into your skin. It is inappropriate to think of your employer in such a manner, you told yourself, but that didn't stop you from wishing you could go back to that lovely dreamland.
The day passed slowly as you helped the princess dress for the day before attending your chores, washing and mending her clothing, arranging her personal items, following her requests. She had always been so kind to you, and you were lucky to be serving her. On more than one occasion she had welcomed you into her own family, and expressed to you that she considered you a friend above employee, however this only made you want to serve her more dutifully.
Naturally your mind drifted to soft hair and pale skin and a musical voice as you hung up your lady's outfit for dinner. You tried to fight it, but the glorious feeling that sunk into your heart made it very difficult. If only he would stop being so rude with that cute smirk and those sparkling eyes, you thought to yourself.
It was once again time for his family's nightly dinner, and Mark was sitting around their long dining table, listening to his brother tell a story from one of his recent hunting excursions. The princess found it dreadful to listen to, but it only made the rest of them chuckle at her disgusting expressions when he got to a particularly gory bit.
"And just as I was taking aim, the lion jumped out from behind a bush merely a few yards away from me and-"
"You all know he is wildly exaggerating, don't you?" The princess interrupted, making everyone in the room laugh.
"Hey now-" Mark's brother turned to banter back at his wife. However, in the motion he knocked his glass of red wine directly onto her lap.
The princess gasped and her husband began immediately into hurried apologies as the Queen asked one of the servants for assistance, sending him rushing out of the room.
A moment later Y/N entered the dining hall in a flourish, carrying some fabric in her hands.
"Oh thank you Miss Y/N," The princess spoke Y/N as she dabbed at the stain forming on her dress.
"I'm sorry to inform you princess, but I'm afraid if we don't treat this soon it will leave a mark on your lovely dress."
"How right you are." The princess turned to face the family, "If you'll excuse me, I must go change."
"Of course dear, take your time," The Queen replied.
As the princess handed her back the rag, Y/N glanced up and unintentionally met the eyes of Mark, who had been watching her intently throughout the scene. He couldn't help but smirk slightly as he watched her face redden, wondering, or rather hoping, that he was the cause of the adorable blush.
The two of them scurried out of the room, leaving the rest to return to their conversation. However, Mark's mind was elsewhere.
He did his best to nod and add half-hearted confirmations when his family spoke, but all the while he was re-playing his dream from the night before in his head. In front of him stood a lovely woman facing away towards the bright blue sky, illuminated by the sun's orange rays. He heard a gentle laugh like the twinkling of a bell, and he couldn't seem to stop smiling. Then the woman turned around and Y/N was looking down at him with all of the love and affection in the world. Her smile felt like he had suddenly stepped out of the shadows into the rays of the sun, a warmth surrounding him that gave him goosebumps in such a wonderful way.
"Mark?"
His brother's gaze snapped him out of his reverie and Mark looked around to find his brother and parents staring at him expectantly.
"What?" He asked, coughing.
"Mom was wondering if you had a special lady in mind to court," He winked suggestively at Mark, which led their mother to chastise him.
"Um... no, n-not really," Mark stuttered. At least, not one they would approve of, "And anyway, I don't think anyone will be ready for the excitement of another wedding for quite a while."
"That is a good point," The King replied, "Your mother was ready to faint with joy."
"I just want my handsome sons to have lives full of love," The Queen said with glassy eyes and a deeply fond expression, "Not to mention that any kingdom without a queen is in deep trouble."
"I can't argue with that," The King laughed, glancing lovingly at his wife.
Mark sighed contently. He could only hope for a love like his parents. Of course there were difficulties, especially earlier on in their relationship before he and his brother had come alone, but they truly were partners, and found strength in each other.
Mark had always found it difficult to believe that he could find such a match. His dating pool was quite small, as it was limited only to the royalty of neighboring kingdoms. Sure, many of the princesses were kind and would one day be great rulers, but Mark wanted something more, as foolish as it may be.
His brother was incredibly lucky to find the woman he loved in the daughter of one of his father's allies. And Mark was also lucky, considering he wasn't first in line for the throne, so he wouldn't be forced into the public eye as much as his brother soon would.
Maybe, then, since he wouldn't have an entire kingdom watching him, Mark could find someone who wasn't royalty or the daughter of a king or duke. Perhaps, if he could convince his parents, he could look elsewhere for love...
That night as he walked to his room after wishing his family goodnight, Mark took a slower pace than usual. He spent extra time analyzing the patterned rug, dragging his feet when he neared his door. By the time he was slowly pulling open the door, he was quietly disappointed that he hadn't happened to run into Y/N as he had the night before.
Just as he was about to give up, Mark heard a door creaking and his head shot to the right, looking down the hallway.
Y/N was gently closing her lady's door, this time carrying the wine-stained dress in her arms. She must have felt Mark's stare, as she turned her head to towards him, her hair falling over her shoulder in a way that made Mark's knees weak.
Mark smiled widely at Y/N, and she shyly returned the grin. They froze there for a long moment, looking into each other's eyes before Y/N waved a small goodnight and turned to be on her way.
When Mark entered his room he shut the door and leaned against it, staring up at the ceiling. A girl he'd only met briefly probably shouldn't be making his heart flutter so much, but he really didn't want it to stop.
