The soft clicking sound of your shoes against the stone walkway perpetuated your nervousness. The sun was just beginning to set, turning the sky a burnt orange shade which reminded you of a dream you once had.
The winding pathway through the palace gardens were as twisted as the knots in your stomach. You tried to convince yourself not to be nervous. After all, you were just going to see Mark, whom you'd seen a million times before, but this felt different. You wouldn't have an audience just down the hall or have to look over your shoulder every few seconds, and you were a bit worried that you wouldn't be able to handle seeing his eyes shine in the waning sunlight.
You took a few deep breaths as you approached the circular patch of grass surrounded by bright carnations of every color from yellow to pink to red.
You froze when you saw Mark standing there, as beautiful as ever. His smile made your knees weak. The light made him glow even more than usual, and he looked absolutely angelic. Your breath was caught in your throat and you had to remind yourself how to exhale.
"I hope you like picnics," Mark said, gesturing to the blanket strewn across the grass below, a woven picnic basket sitting beside him. "I can't take all the credit, though. I had a little help from the princess."
"The princess?" You choked out, eyes wide as you stepped closer.
"Yes," Mark replied, looking at you with a grin. "She seems to like the idea of us as much as I do."
You shifted your face towards the ground to hide your blush, but Mark tilted your head up with a finger under your chin before taking your hands in his.
"I wish you would stop trying to hide your beautiful face," He whispered.
"Well I wish you would stop making me blush."
"I'm afraid that's not going to happen anytime soon."
Mark leaned down and kissed you softly. It was a much gentler kiss than your first, and you were able to take your time to enjoy it without feeling anxious about being seen. The sun's beams warmed your skin and you melted into Mark's arms as he tightened his hold around your waist. Soon you couldn't remember where you ended and Mark began.
When you pulled apart to catch your breath Mark's lips turned up at the edges. Your muscles felt so relaxed that you almost want to lie down in his arms and take a nap.
"I brought food," He chuckled.
You pecked his lips once more before sitting down with him on the picnic blanket. He began to pull out snacks of all sorts from fruits to small cakes. You were entirely overwhelmed with joy in that moment with Mark, and you didn't know how to express it.
"How did the princess react?" You asked after he had served you some lemonade.
"Very well," He replied smiling inwardly.
"You don't think she'll tell your brother?"
"Not before I do."
The answer shocked you and you weren't sure how to respond. You never dreamed you would be in such a position, caught between societal rules, a maid falling for a prince. Although, that was before you met Mark.
"I would never ask you to do that," You spoke softly, staring down at a bowl of fresh picked strawberries.
"I know you wouldn't," Mark set down the grapes he was eating and scooted across the blanket to sit beside you and take your hand in his, "Y/N, I want to be with you. I want to be with you in every possible way. I want to spend my evenings on walks through the garden with you. I want your face to be the last thing I see before I fall asleep each night and the first thing I see each morning. I want to be yours and I want you to be mine, and I don't care who knows, or what I have to do to make it so."
"Aren't you afraid of what your parents will think?" You couldn't bring your voice to be above a whisper.
"No," He spoke confidently. "If my parents don't like it, they have their other son's coronation to worry about. And, besides, I think when they see how much you mean to me, they wouldn't dare try to get between us."
"Are you sure I'm worth this?"
Mark's expression was one that made you think he could see right through all of your barriers. Never had someone gazed at you in such a way that you were instantly calmed simply by their presence. You trusted Mark, and nothing would change that.
"I've never been more sure of something."
The sky transformed into a sea of pinks and purples as the evening continued, and you and Mark became lost in each other. You laughed and smiled together when Mark wasn't able to catch a grape in his mouth, and when you clumsily spilled lemonade on your skirt. You almost wished you could see what the carnations saw: two young people discovering what it felt like to be in love.
Of course it wouldn't be easy. Nothing ever was. But somehow, lying in the garden next to Mark as a cool breeze fluttered through your hair, you didn't mind how difficult it would be. You knew that as long as you had Mark beside you, everything would be okay. As for Mark, he knew that with you there to support him, he could accomplish anything. Plus, he thought that Princess Y/N had a nice ring to it.
