Weeks had passed since the day Y/N and Mark first shared glances. For Mark the days were filled with diplomacy and his duties as prince, while you continued to serve the princess and spend the rest of her time in the basement servants' quarters, where she had made a few friends among the staff. However, there was still a certain person of the castle whom she wished she could be with during all of the lonely moments of her days.
It was not uncommon for you to meet the eyes of Mark when they passed each other in the hallway. They had even spoken on a few more occasions, typically after dinner when they crossed paths on their way to bed. There was one time even that Mark had joined you while you were walking the princess' dog outside, a poodle named Maximus. He had been on the castle lawn and seen your hair gently blowing in the breeze, and he couldn't help himself from joining you.
That had been such a lovely day. Mark told you about how he'd had a dog when he was younger, and you shared that your family could never afford a pet, so you loved spending time with Maximus. You discovered that his favorite flowers were carnations as you walked past the palace gardens, and that his favorite season was spring, when the world was full of bright colors.
Mark still reminded you on all occasions that calling him, 'Your Highness' was much too formal, and insisted on calling him Prince Mark if you wouldn't be casual and simply call him by his name, as he called you.
Your training as a servant to royalty told you that it wasn't quite appropriate, all of the moments you spent with the prince. However, you could never quite keep yourself away, and although you worried why Prince Mark would want to be spending his time with a simple servant girl, you figured there wasn't much harm in being friendly.
Today you found yourself sitting in the servants' small dining hall, patching one of the princess' corsets that had begun fraying slightly. Other maids and butlers were seated at the table around you, some reading, some playing cards, some having delightful conversations that filled the room with a pleasant and humorous air.
Suddenly there was a mad shuffling, and you realized that the rest of the workers were rapidly getting to their feet, so you followed suit, assuming someone of the royal family had made a rare appearance at the door.
Prince Mark was standing there, looking dashing as ever, his crisp black clothing contrasting from the dusty interior of the room. The Queen's lady's maid graciously greeted him as she was of the highest rank in the room, and he gave her a fond smile.
"Please, don't remain standing for me," He requested before we all slowly sat down quietly, "I was wondering where Mr. Bates is? I've torn one of my favorite handkerchiefs and I was wondering if he could mend it for me."
"I'm sorry Your Highness, but Mr. Bates just ran to the market to get more polish as he ran out while polishing your shoes."
"Oh, how wonderful of him," Mark said.
"But if you would still like your handkerchief mended soon, then I'm sure Miss Y/N would be happy to help,"
Your head shot up from staring at your lap to the entire room staring at you, particularly the Queen's lady's maid with a slightly stern expression.
You got her hint and quickly rushed to stand up, bowing slightly. Mark had that familiar mischievous glint in his eyes.
"I don't want to interrupt your current duties," He said to you politely from across the room.
