You were so deeply invested in the book you were reading that you jumped out of your skin when the doorbell to your apartment abruptly rang, breaking the silence in your living room.
Reluctantly you grabbed a gum wrapper on the coffee table and marked your spot. You walked to the door as if you were sleep walking, your mind still reeling in the universe of the novel your nose had been stuck in all afternoon.
You opened the door to find your boyfriend Jackson standing in the doorway with his big goofy grin that never failed to make your heart flutter a bit.
"Y/N!" Jackson practically yelled, throwing his arms around your shoulders as if you hadn't seen each other in weeks, when you had just had a movie date the night before.
"Hey babe," You laughed into his warm chest, "Shouldn't you be at practice right now?"
"They canceled it, thank god," He told you, walking past you and into your apartment, holding your hand in his and pulling you after him, "So that means that I get to spend the afternoon with my lovely girlfriend."
You couldn't help but sigh in relief as you both fell onto the couch together. It was incredibly strange and it never quite made sense to you, but it was somehow easier for you to breathe whenever Jackson was around. It was almost as if he helped lift the weight of your lungs, so you wouldn't have to on your own.
He pulled you into his chest so that you were nearly seated on his lap, smiling wildly as you laughed at how ridiculous and silly he was sometimes. For a minute or so you just sat there in silence, enjoying each other's presence without saying a word. You could feel his chest rising and falling slowly beneath your head, and you tightened your arm around his waist.
However, it wasn't long until your mind wandered to the book you had previously been engulfed in. It was still sitting beautifully on the small table in front of you. Simply seeing the cover made your heart rate pick up, and you couldn't help but let your thoughts spin with questions. What would happen next? How was the main character going to get out of the mess she made? Would her best friend ever forgive her? Will they ever find the peace they've been looking for?
"You're thinking so loud that I can hear you," Jackson whispered into your ear. He chuckled when you jumped in surprise. "What's up?"
"Oh, nothing," You hummed.
"Tell me, I wanna know!"
"It's just this book I was reading," You reached forward and grabbed the book before returning comfortably to his arms, "It's so incredible! I've been reading it all day. I absolutely love the way the author uses the dialogue to progress the plot, and how you're able to hear how the characters are speaking without any other description, but only when it makes the story more clear than it would with paragraphs of explanation."
While you continued on and on with your rant about how wonderful the novel was, Jackson stared at you fondly. He loved the way your eyes lit up when you talked about books and stories, and how you tripped over your words because your brain was working faster than your mouth could. He found your passion beautiful beyond measure.
"What?"
Jackson realized that his staring must have been a little too obvious when you suddenly called him out.
"Why are laughing?" You asked, hitting him lightly on the chest with a smile.
"You're very cute when you talk about books," Your boyfriend admitting, making you blush. "Your nerdy side is adorable."
"I'm not nerdy, I'm just well-read!"
"Face it, Y/N, you're a complete nerd."
"Okay... Maybe I am... "
"I love it," Jackson leaned in and kissed your temple. Sighing again, you set down the book beside you on the couch. "Hey, don't let me stop you from reading!"
"I'm not just gonna sit here and read while you're bored out of your mind." You replied, sticking your tongue out at him.
"No, really!" Jackson protested, "You're really enjoying it, you should keep reading. I'll read too!"
"You'll read?" Raising your eyebrows, you looked at him in disbelief.
"Yes, I will," He said matter-of-factly, "Give me a book and I'll read it. As long as we can still cuddle."
"I never miss a chance to cuddle," After placing a quick kiss on Jackson's lips you ran to your bedroom and glanced over your practically bursting bookshelf. You couldn't remember the last time Jackson had read a book with his busy schedule, and you figured he probably couldn't either.
Grinning, you picked one of your favorite books off the shelf, and walked back to the living room with a bounce in your step.
"Here," You took your seat beside Jackson, "Y/F/B. You'll love it, I promise."
He took the book and opened it to the first page with a fake high-and-mighty expression. Laughing to yourself, you picked up your own book and excitedly opened it to the bookmarked page.
Almost immediately you were pulled back into the fictional world, taking in each word on the page hungrily.
Beside you Jackson was trying to read the novel. The few first pages were interesting, and he was beginning to understand why you liked it so much, but he quickly became distracted by his girlfriend sitting next to him. He couldn't focus on the words in front of him while you were leaning against his chest, so involved in what you were doing that you didn't realize you were biting and sucking on your lower lip in a way that made his head spin.
Jackson took those moments to be grateful for having you in his life. It was always frustrating to him how you could never see how amazing you were, no matter how many times he told you so. All he could think of when he saw you was how the stars always shined a little brighter when you were around. As cheesy as it was, he saw entire galaxies in your eyes, and it was almost embarrassingly easy for him to become lost in them.
"You're doing it again."
Your voice pulled Jackson out of his reverie, and he suddenly realized that his book wasn't even open anymore.
"Doing what?"
"Staring at me," You replied, tearing your eyes from the page to look at him with a small grin, "Do I have something on my face?"
Jackson shook his head with a smirk, leaning in to place his lips on yours. The kiss lingered, and you could feel the air around you suddenly change.
"Do you still want to read?" He spoke into the kiss, just loud enough for you to hear him.
You closed the book and pushed it aside without breaking the kiss, answering his question by crawling onto his lap.
