Mark could barely keep his excitement in as he walked up the stairs to the main floor of the Tuan castle. His lips still tingled faintly from sensation, a reminder of how you affected him without even trying to.

He hoped he hadn't moved too fast and made you uncomfortable, but he simply couldn't handle how beautiful you looked in that moment with a small beam of sunlight reflecting in your gorgeous eyes. When you had kissed him back shivers went down his spine. Mark was so relieved when you seemed to feel the same towards him as he felt towards you.

Mark tried to go about his day, but he couldn't quite focus on anything but you. He caught himself smiling idiotically at the wall when he was supposed to be responding to a letter from the king of an adjacent kingdom about an invitation to a yearly ball, and realized that he needed to see you again. Soon.

A week had passed since Mark kissed you and part of you still thought it might have been a hallucination or a dream. You were sure that it had been real, however, when you caught Mark watching you with a grin after the princess had called you to the living room to request you order a new dress to be made for her. He had gone so far as to wink, which struck you as risky, but he didn't seem to care.

You continued your ritual of catching each other when you crossed paths while Mark was heading to bed and you were leaving the princess' room. Your conversations became more frequent, and Mark confided in you on multiple occasions about family struggles and problems he was having, as well as about the good things he had been experiencing. He adamantly said that you were one of those good parts of his day.

However, there hadn't been another kiss since the first one. Of course, there was never quite a good time, as someone was always passing by or too close for comfort. And he wanted to make it special, wanted to make you feel just as special as you were.

He was in the middle of tea with his family when the perfect idea hit him. His brother wondered why he was wearing a cheshire grin for no apparent reason, but all Mark could do was shake his head and continue to think through his plan. Hopefully he would be able to set it up without too much trouble. However, he also decided that if he was going to be able to be with you then and, hopefully, in the future, he would need a confidant.

That's how Mark found himself at the door of the princess that evening, before you would be there to help her dress for supper.

She welcomed him warmly, asking what he needed. Mark's hands suddenly became clammy at the implications of the secret he was about to share, but it was too late to go back, and he wasn't going to let anything stop him on his mission.

"I'm going to tell you a secret," Mark began nervously, "But you have to promise me that you won't tell anyone, even my brother."

"Of course," She nodded him on encouragingly.

Here it goes, Mark thought.

"I like Y/N," He suddenly blurted out.

"As in-"

"Yes, as in your lady's maid Y/N. I ran into her in the hallway a few weeks ago and ever since then I've been looking for every excuse to see and talk to her. Then, a week ago I kissed her, and-"

"You kissed her?!" The princess exclaimed.

"Hush!" Mark looked fearfully at the door for a moment before lowering his voice. "Yes, I kissed her. And now I can't think of anything but her. The way she pushes her hair out of her face when she's focused, how her smile can light up a room, how motivated and passionate she is-"

"Mark," The princess interrupted her step-brother. "I completely understand. Y/N is a lovely woman. She deserves someone wonderful like you."

"R-Really?" He replied hesitantly. "You don't think it's crazy for me to be so enamored by a servant?"

"As you know, Y/N is much more than a servant," She tisked, "I have never had a more loyal friend and companion than Y/N, and she has a heart more pure than most people I've met in this world. It's not at all surprising that she would be attracted to you, considering you're just as compassionate and good-hearted.

"Mark, nothing would make me happier than to see you and Y/N together. Whatever you need help with, I'm in."

"Thank you so much," Mark pulled his sister-in-law into a tight hug. He couldn't explain how grateful he was to have her in his family, and he hoped he could one day be as in love as she was with Mark's brother.

"Okay, so what's your plan?" She asked once they had pulled apart.

Mark grinned, and soon they were deep in discussion about the details of how he would sweep you off your feet.

"Y/N?" You perked up when you heard your name as you entered the servant's quarters.

"Yes, miss?"

"You weren't here when the mail arrived so I left it on the dresser in your room," The queen's lady's maid informed you.

You thanked her and turned to go to your room. It wasn't very often that you received mail, however your parents made sure to send word to you about how they were doing at least once a month.

On your dresser sat two small white envelopes, the top one addressed from your parents. Your brows furrowed when you picked up the other letter, which held no return address, only your name written in beautiful scrawling letters.

This peaked your interest and you decided to open it first. Carefully you cut open the end of the envelope, and out came a folded piece of expensive looking stationery. You unfolded it as if you could rip it with any small movement, and were met by unfamiliar handwriting.

Y/N,

Please meet me in the back garden by the carnations at 5:00 this afternoon. The princess will not require your assistance to dress tonight. I'm looking forward to seeing you.

Yours,

Mark

Your breathing quickened as you realized what the letter was. After reading it through a second time you carefully folded it and placed it back in its envelope, setting it carefully under your pillow. Excitement flowed through your veins. You wondered what Mark had planned, and spent the next few hours with him on your mind as the time grew closer for you to see the prince.
