"Babe, you know I would be there if I could," You spoke with your phone sandwiched between your ear and your shoulder.
"I know," Your boyfriend Jaebum whined, "But I'm going to be in America! There finally won't be an ocean between us. And I haven't seen you in months," His voice fell quiet as he finished, and you could tell he was more disappointed than you'd seen him in a while. Usually he pretended to always be okay, or at least always able to make due, but as he got closer to you and started opening up you could see how much he hurt sometimes. Your heart clenched at the thought of him thousands of miles away from you sitting alone in the dorm, wishing you were with him as much as you did.
"Hey," You said softly, taking your hands from the keyboard of your essay-ridden laptop, "It'll be okay, alright? I might not be able to see you when you're in Dallas, but I'm flying out there as soon as finals are over."
"I know," He repeated. "I just really miss you."
"I miss you too," You tried to hide the choke in your voice. Jaebum was always reassuring people, but right now he was the one who needed assurance. "I tell you what. While you're kicking ass at your Dallas concert I'll be watching you on some lovely ahgase's live stream, and I want you to look out at everyone in the audience and know that I'm there too, watching and singing along."
"Okay."
"Do you promise?"
"I promise." Jaebum chuckled. You smiled knowing that your boyfriend was doing the same. "But I still have your ticket. Just in case."
"Good. I'll put it in my scrapbook."
For a moment you listened to Jaebum's steady breathing over the phone line, wishing for some power in the universe to pluck you from your dorm in Michigan and set you down in his arms.
"I love you. With all my heart."
"I love you too Y/N," Jaebum whispered. "More than anything."
You said goodbye and hung up, knowing it was very late where he was and that he would need some sleep for whatever busy schedule would be waiting for him in the morning. With a sigh you looked back at your laptop, noting how the word count at the bottom of your document was only half of what it should have been. You cursed the world, or more accurately your professors, for scheduling two finals the day of the concert, and one that day after. They were a month away, but even so it felt like you had no time to prepare. And now you had the added disappointment of being merely a few hundred miles from the love of your life, and spending the time sitting in a lecture hall instead of with him.
As you fell asleep that night you looked at the lock screen on your phone. It was a picture of you and Jaebum, his arm thrown over your shoulder with a grin from ear to ear. He deserved the whole world, and you couldn't even give him a day.
That's it, you thought as you closed your eyes. I'm going to make it to that concert no matter what it takes.
~ One month later ~
Your mind didn't stop reeling until you practically fell into your assigned seat on the airplane, and even then you still felt a bit dizzy. All you wanted was to fall asleep and stay that way until you landed in Dallas, but you had other things to do.
Apparently the universe decided to give you a break, and you had somehow convinced your professors to let you take the final exams early. Although, you were pretty sure they were so shocked that anyone would want to take the test before they had too, that they threw you a bone and hoped maybe you were just enthusiastic about their course.
