Reborn

Chapter 1

The sun was seeping through the trees, lighting up the forest floor all around me.

It was a hot day, too hot and sunny to stay inside. I had just got home from school and had decided to go for a walk in the woods beside my house. The forest was the perfect place to be, the trees sheltered me from the sun and a slight breeze made its way through the forest to great me, cooling me down.

I was heading to a river. It was where I would usually go on a day like this because it was so peaceful. The dead leaves on the forest floor crunched underfoot. A few birds could be heard singing their beautiful song.

Occasionally I would spot a mouse running across the path and into the dense bush on the other side.

After a while I could hear the powerful yet calming sound of the river flowing through the forest. The river seemed to bring the forest to life. It made everything more vibrant.

As soon as I got to the river I took off my shoes and stuck my feet into the river, the river's coldness distracted me from the heat of the sun. Then from my bag I took out my phone and earphones and played some music.

I lay down and closed my eyes, listening to the music and taping my foot in the water along to the beat.

If I had to describe today in three words I think it probably would have been stressful, hot and useless. I was in my first year at college, which meant that a lot of the time we were preparing for exams. I had been doing fairly well with revision and keeping up with assessments. But recently I couldn't concentrate on anything, in class I would find myself thinking about something completely off topic to what the teacher was talking about. It was making me nervous because I knew if I didn't listen then I would miss something important that could come up in the end of year exam.

I wasn't the smartest in the year, nowhere near. I wasn't getting A*s on all my exams but I was trying hard. I had struggled with maths for a long time and only recently had I started to understand it. Slowly my test scores were going up and I was getting better and better.

I could sit by the river for ages and reflect on everything, it was my way of calming myself down and loosening up.

Falling asleep by the river was a high possibility for me, it had happened many times; I wouldn't mean to, it would just happen.

I must have woken up to my music abruptly stopping (because my phone had run out of battery). It was now getting dark and I didn't know how long I had been out there. My parents probably knew that I was at the river but I had no way of contacting them now. I decided it would probably be a good idea if I headed home. It wasn't a far walk, 15 minutes usually.

I stood up and started walking. I knew that I was sun burnt, my skin felt raw, hot and itchy.

I had been walking for a good 5 minutes before something stopped me in my tracks. There was a light in the distance. Bright and radiant. It almost seemed too bright to be someone walking with a flash light. It seemed unnatural.

The light was moving, it took me a second to realise that it was moving towards me, slowly at first then started getting faster and faster.

You would think that if there was a strange, foreign looking ball of light coming towards you quickly that your first thought would be to run away as fast as you could. But for some reason I just stared at the ball of light, I felt warm and calm staring at it. It fascinated me.

The ball of light stopped about 5 meters in front of me. Even though it didn't have eyes it was looking at me, I knew it was. There seemed to be a connection between us, like we understood each other.

For ages everything was still, it was just the light and me.

Then before I could act the ball of light closed the gap between us and seeped into me. A mixture of severe pain and comforting warmth radiated throughout my body. I was going to blackout. Black spots filled my vision and before I knew it I was falling to the ground. But before I lost consciousness, I heard a whisper in my mind.

'Mara'.
