Chapter 16

Frantically I looked around the room. There must have been something I could do. I tried thinking of something to say but no words came out of my mouth. 

Maki thought I was 'human', that was the first thought to my head. He didn't know that I was bonded to Fern's Wolf so somehow I had the surprise advantage. Although I knew I wasn't fully transitioned I had to think of something in order to save Kaylyn. Somehow I needed to tell someone what was happening.

Mindlink, I heard a voice call out to me. I had only heard this voice a number of times but I knew who it was. It was Mara.

Your Mindlink will be the strongest with Adam because he's our mate.

I didn't know how to talk back to her,

You're doing it now... we communicate through thought and speech, Mara responded,

"It seems you have lost your tongue girl," Maki said with a laugh and I realised I had been standing there speechless for a while. 

Okay, we'll contact Adam, how do I do it?

You really need to make up your mind Missy, Mara said, You need to call out to Adam's wolf called Seph and then you can speak. Concentrate Bonnie.

How will I know if it's worked? I asked her,

You'll know if he responds, Mara said in a 'matter of fact' tone of voice.

I ignored her and concentrated,

Seph can you hear me?

No answer,

Seph, can you hear me? I tried to think louder, I realised this was a stupid thing to think.

"This little girl has seemed to turn into a statue," Maki said, almost laughing which made me lose my concentration,

I had to think of something to say or this could be the last time I see Kaylyn alive.

"Why are you here?" I said, 

Maki smiled,
"Out of all the questions, you could have asked me, you asked me that? You look like a smart girl." He said sarcastically. There was silence. Maki rolled his eyes,
"Fine," he mumbled "You see, little girl, I like things to go my way, and they did for a while but now I've come to a bump in the road. Now, that's not something to get excited over because it can easily be fixed. I need another werewolf to complete my experiment.' Maki smirked.

"What experiment?" I asked timidly,

"Little girl, it wouldn't be a surprise if I told you what the experiment was!" 

Just as he said this, a figure came into view from the window. Relief flooded through my body as I watched the figure walk from the woods to the house... It was Adam. I had no idea whether he had heard me through mindlink but he was here now and that was all that mattered.

I had to keep my eyes off of him otherwise, Maki would have realised that something was going on and hurt Kaylyn.
"Why did you choose Fern, why not someone else?" I swam through my brain, searching for questions.

Maki looked into the distance and smiled as if remembering a fond memory,
"I chose Fern because she was... hmm how can I say this? Stronger, than the other wolves in the pack. We watched her for weeks when she was on duty and guarding the Pack House, all down to the time she went to sleep, waiting for a chance to snatch her."

"You're sick" were the only words I could mutter. I stole a quick glance out the window and saw that Adam was closer. I didn't know whether he'd seen Maki standing in the kitchen but he was Kaylyn's only hope.

The man laughed,
"I've heard worse"
