Shit.
This didn't go as planned. James was now in the same building as she is and her friends. She didn't meant for it to be this way, not when she just knew about him, about his return. She needed to spend time with him alone. She needed to think through, was her feelings still there for James? Or was the way she felt when Steve confessed proved that she had moved on and fallen for the blonde instead? Honestly, she doesn't know.
"Jarvis? Is Barnes in his room already?" She asked the AI, decided to have her alone time with James.
"Yes, are you going to visit him? I'm sorry agent, but I'm obligated to let your teammates watch from the CCTV in his room. Captain's orders."
"That's fine," she said after reconsidering her actions. She needed this, to get him off her mind, all she needed was to talk to him, interact with him.
---
"James?" She asked softly as she entered his room, then he was rushing towards the door, a big bright smile on his face as he sees her.
"Natasha!" He exclaimed as he reached for her and pulled her in for a long-long hug, she missed his hugs, but somehow this one doesn't felt like the ones she used to have with him, it lacks an element of comfort, not like those they had back then. The rest of the Avengers were watching the whole thing from a projected screen in the common room, in case Natasha had a breakdown like the last time.
They pulled away, silence between them before she asked, "Why now? Why not look for me earlier? I-I thought you were dead, James," he sighed and brought her to sit on his bedside.
"I tried to, after they took us apart, you ran away. I thought I lost you... I continued working for them, but without you there, my days seemed meaningless. One day, I was searching through the files, and I found one saying you were here. So, I ran away, lure you out of here, because I can't just come in here and go looking for you, I look like a threat," he said lifting his metal arm, Natasha listening to his explanation intently, "I'm sorry Natasha, I should've looked for you earlier. I didn't mean to hurt you or that random guy in the flag suit at the warehouse that day." Ouch, that must've hurt for Steve. Steve who was watching flinched a little at his words, he really have forgotten who Steve was.
"Random guy?! He wasn't a random guy, James. Because of you, he was nearly dead! He was there when I needed him, he was there to look after me even if I didn't need him to, and where were you? So don't you dare one more time call him 'random guy' because he has a name and it's Steve." She defended Steve, causing the guilty feelings inside Bucky surfaced. Steve grinned to himself watching her defend him.
"I'm sorry," he said apologetically, she could see. Then there was another silence.
"I love you, Natasha, I still do," he said breaking the silence, taking her hands and holding it above his lap. She was speechless at this. Does she love him too? Right now there and then did she? She wasn't quite sure. Hearing those words, Steve stood up from his seat and put both of his hand behind his neck looking down, wandering here and there around the room. Wanda knew what's happening.
"You're a good man, James," she said and put her hands to his cheeks and gave it a little stroke. Steve had enough, he can't stand watching this. He stood up and left the room while the others kept watching the live footage.
"Not really,no. But you're the only one who understands that."
